Trick or Treat by °chanelqueen17 1 month 2 weeks ago

^nat
After months of work, chanelqueen17 has created a gorgeous scene of Alice and Oz from Pandora Hearts, using scans that didn't even feature both characters together. Even after spending so much time on matching the details of the characters to their new looks, chanelqueen17 didn't stop there and went all out on the background too! This wallpaper definitely needs to be seen!

Character Image

There is an inconsistency in image quality. On one hand you have crispy clean vector quality image as your central focus but as you move your focus towards the left and right, the image quality deteriorates to somewhat blurry and faded out screenshot quality.

Photos

Photo outlines suffer from anti-aliasing problems due to rotating of the lines. Solid black outlines also gives the photos an unnatural feel which is detached from the background. Shadows also compounds the problem further by making the photos feel as if it's floating. Positioning of the photos also interferes with the main vector image. Suggestion is to try something other than photos as it is currently cluttering up the whole layout.

Background

Try placing some subtle motifs behind the vector images. You can also play around with inversing the current layer positioning of the images by having the vector image in the front and the photos being in the background (with more subtle outlines and minus the shadow)."

Witchblade Movie 2009

"I doubt they will need to please the manga and anime community as I believe this is not a manga/anime live action adaptation. However, they will need to please the crowds who follow the Top Cow comics I believe.

On whether it can make it big on the silver screen, that depends on how well the movie is directed and the quality of the actors. 2008 is the year of revival for comic book adaptations, 2009 as well and stretching till the next few years (culminating with the Ultimate Avengers movie). We have seen some really good comic heroes on screen movies like Iron Man, The Incredible Hulk and the Dark Knight. So who knows?"

What do you think of people reading manga at the bookstore?

1 year 1 week ago

"I have always been wondering...are the mangas at your local store shrink wrapped? Mine is.

As for people sitting along the aisle and being an obstruction, it is indeed irritating when you have to lean your body just to see what the racks have to offer. The worse thing for them to do is sitting down with the rack as back support and legs spread out across the aisle. Squatting isn't too bad since the aisle at Borders are sufficiently wide enough to not get obstructed except when the title that you are looking for is right behind their backs.

Sometimes when I'm feeling irritated and someone is sitting in the way, I'll just walk past with my head looking "busy" at the other titles and "accidentally" kick them.

I have always wanted to go a bit more extreme as in backing away from the shelves and "accidentally" step on their foot/fingers. But then, the thought of having to deal with the bothersome aftermath is a put off."

Should the U.S. Government bail out car industries?

1 year 1 week ago

"One shouldn't look at the big three (General Motors, Ford and Chrysler) as just companies or CEO's getting fat paychecks. The automotive industry keeps hundreds of thousands of people employed (indirectly, could possibly be millions) employed. The people who assemble the cars are only a fraction of the thousands more who work in other supporting industries that supply carmakers with the necessary parts.

One should also take into the account the repercussion of what will happen to the US economy when you put such a huge amount of people into unemployment. You are going to push the economy further into a downward spiral as unemployed people start spending less, thus generating less income for other non-automotive related companies (eg: retail, services, etc). These companies will then be forced to cut costs and what easier way to do so than to reduce output and retrench excess workers. These retrenched workers will then also cut back on their spending and the vicious cycle will continue. All these have an impact on the economic health of the US, measured by Gross Domestic Product.

It's not easy to just write off the big three and say that they should go under. Yes, other car companies are also facing difficult times but they are still far away from needing help to survive. GM will be unable to fulfill its financial obligations (i.e. paying of debt/bills) by year end if it doesn't receive financial aid. If a company as big as GM goes under, it will pull down all its parts suppliers as well. Indirectly, that will also pull Chrysler and ultimately Ford (who is the less worse off than the other two and is capable of surviving longer) who both rely on those same suppliers too.

While the responsibility of this whole mess lies with the big three's CEOs' 7 years of mismanagement, shoddy products and bad choices (their vision of more gas guzzling SUVs on the road which failed to sell when oil price went up the roof) who fly around in corporate jets and putting poor effort in an attempt to convince the Congress to approve the bailout (their constant harping on unemployment whilst trying not to take the responsibility of the whole mess smacks of blackmailing), some blame also needs to be shouldered by the United Auto Workers union. An example is the setting up of a job bank which obviously is a serious drag on cost competitiveness on the big three as well.

During this week's hearings, members of Congress said they would want to see shared sacrifice at all levels, from hourly workers to executives. The jobs bank, derided as paying people not to work, is oft-criticized as an example of what's wrong with the U.S. auto industry.

At a news conference at the UAW's headquarters in Detroit on Thursday, Gettelfinger would not say whether the union would be willing to give up the jobs bank if required by Congress as a condition of a loan bailout.

When UAW autoworkers are laid off, they receive a combination of unemployment benefits and supplemental pay from their employer for 48 weeks. If they remain laid off beyond that, they move to the jobs bank, where the company provides about 95% of their pay and benefits. Until the most recent contract, people could remain in the jobs bank for years.

My take on this? Attached conditions for automotive industry reform in exchange for the bailout.

- Get the CEOs to take responsibility and have the automotive industry go into merger and acquisition mode, even if it means American carmakers being bought over by non-American carmakers. Let other CEOs who can actually do the job run the company regardless of nationality. A troubled Nissan was saved by Carlos Ghosn, a non-Japanese. Stubbornness and resistance to change is the worse thing that could happen to a company (refer to 3rd point on acceptance of new management style).
- Streamline the whole supply chain. GM for one is saddled with too many dealers.
- When merged or acquired, accept new management style (resistance to change is the main reason why mergers fail) since your bread and butter is on the line if the company tanks from not seeking outside help. Lawsuits were flying all over the place when American investors claim that a DaimlerChrysler merger amounted to a Daimler takeover of Chrysler and Chrysler's workers refused to recognize German ownership. Heck, they even still operated as two separate entities even after the merger with their own operation lines.
- CEO and top executives need to show sincerity and take a pay cut. I'm sure they have received a lot of stock and earned a lot during their tenure at the companies. It is possible that they have already earned a lot from cashing their stocks. Steve Jobs earns only a $1 salary (with lots of restricted stocks though) when he came in to rescue Apple. Flying economy class helps cut down costs as well. Many CEOs in the financial sector (eg. Lehman, Goldman Sachs) are forgoing their bonuses this year.
- Reduce the power of unions. They are always a drag to competitiveness with their demand for "better" benefits (like the job bank) and better pay that needs to be re-negotiated on a regular basis once the union agreement has expired. Treat your workers better so that they don't feel the need to join a union. In the long run, it's cheaper and a happy worker is a productive and loyal worker. Toyota proves that this method works. The concept of collective bargaining and unions are meant to provide workers' with better working conditions but when you have union leaders who engage in predatory practices against businesses, they are no better than the CEOs who subject their workers to long hours and low wages.
- Businesses...take up Corporate Social Responsibility 101 courses. Treating your workers poorly was what caused the rise of unions in the first place. Workers are stakeholders as well and again, a happy worker is a productive and loyal worker. Will you take the opportunity of the impending breakdown to bust the union and run off with the money through more bad decisions, leaving the workers high and dry? Or will you retool your businesses in a more efficient manner whilst retaining your precious workers with better working conditions?
- Get a business model that works. Gas guzzlers are out. Fuel efficiency is the buzzword. But if the big three can't survive long enough to actually put that buzzword into the production line...

So- I don't know. I hope Obama can get in there and wave a magic wand and things will be fixed. Only a major reconstruction of the entire economy and a lot of time, patience and cooperation will get us out of our sink hole.

The problem is that the market is ruled by sentiments and not fundamentals. Hence, market fluctuations are mostly moved by institutional speculators who trade based on prospect of potential profit and liquidate their positions at the mere sign of doomsaying. Look at commodity prices. Talks of war, declining petroleum reserves, etc pushed crude oil prices beyond its real value. Similarly, talks of biodiesel pushed price of crude palm oil to ridiculous heights as speculators moved into the palm oil futures to buy low and sell high (which they are now burnt from it as market prices fall) and this has impacted other food commodities like soybean and rice with talks of more agriculture land is being used in favor of biodiesel production as opposed to using it to feed the people. Fear of losses on the other hand caused market shares for financial institutions like Goldman Sachs or JP Morgan to suffer up till the point that hey need to seek help.

No single president can ever solve this through political process alone or through bailout packages. In the end, the market needs to buck up and restore confidence on its own. That's why market correction and recuperation takes a long time. No one is willing to risk their money in the market nowadays."

"Wallpaper lacks focus. And there's no cohesion as well. You have two sides of the wallpaper doing two different things. It's as if there are two different wallpapers on a single wallpaper canvas. Focus on only one image set and let it be the main draw.

Moon is overly realistic and doesn't mix well with the background. And the two moons again give the feeling of two wallpapers in one as mentioned above.

You need to work on the stars as it doesn't look like stars at present. It looks more like randomly placed sparklies. There are tutorials out in the net that try to provide a more decent starfield effect that you might want to look up and see which one suits the wallpaper best.

The blue hue on the right is too strong. You would be better off using darker and more subdued blue hues.

Your text is too low. The taskbar will cover most of it, leaving some swirly parts of the top peeking out."
