Trick or Treat by °chanelqueen17 1 month 2 weeks ago

^nat
After months of work, chanelqueen17 has created a gorgeous scene of Alice and Oz from Pandora Hearts, using scans that didn't even feature both characters together. Even after spending so much time on matching the details of the characters to their new looks, chanelqueen17 didn't stop there and went all out on the background too! This wallpaper definitely needs to be seen!

Are you trying to get all the votes?

*moutonzare 13 minutes ago
Yeah, the boomerang is more straightforward to do since the shade are more "flat". The hair will be long to do but hard I think. The face will be hard. I still have to adjust gradients on outlines.

~NosVII 21 minutes ago
Boomerang is not hard, I think. Most time will go into the hair probably.

Not me then, that much I know.

144hours without break, food and sleep. I don't think can hold this pace X) The remaining parts are the face, hair and boomerang. It should be ok...hopefully ^^'

Last Exile - widescreen

2 years 9 months ago

"Working on something new. I've put a lot of time into it thus far, slaving over what should and shouldn't be in it. Eventually, what resulted was this very simple widescreen wall.

1280x800 (for convenience of viewing)
2560x1600 (full size)

Please, tell me any thoughts you have. Feel free to nitpick and point out obvious, minute things. Every little bit helps."

Rin & Archer wall ^^ i need comments about that

2 years 10 months ago

"Speaking generally, and taking into account your stated goal, I'd say that that goal could have been better achieved. If you're really trying to blend the characters into the background, you should dull down or remove completely some of those hard black lines whose purpose is to seperate them. For instance, the line of Archer's coat in the upper left could easily be removed and the colours blended for much more effect. Probably somewhat along his right arm, too, though to a lesser degree.

Just a thought."

A Short Break for the Mods

2 years 10 months ago

"I'll comply, sure. But it makes me wonder why you guys don't have a scheduled bi-monthly downtime or something like that which would give your mods regular breaks. You know, just a couple days every other week where the option to submit wallpapers simply isn't available to members. All (or most) of us understand and respect the workload of the moderators, so I'm sure we'd all be more than willing to comply. Heck, I'd do it happily, just to know that they were getting a Saturday off.

Well, just an idea I wanted to put forth. Take it or leave it."

Black Lagoon wallpaper

"Asa, yes, the text is Russian. And you have helped me some. Especially that bit about a wallpaper needing to tell a story. You've just reminded me of what I had in mind when I set out to make this, and brought it to my attention that at some point during the process I overlooked that theme. As it result, the wallpaper seems to be without one. It's missing a few elements.

Yeah, you pretty much just pointed out a few basic mistakes with large implications. I'm going to go back and put in some more work time. After that, I can probably call it final. I'll be working with some of the quality issues, too.

Thank you two very much for your comments. They were both invaluable."

Why do we have knowledge when we are denied of it?

2 years 10 months ago

"
Omnidevil
^
Say:
Wise man said unto his apprentice:
"upon that rock lies hidden knowledge that will bring wealth and health unto thee, should you seek out the goodness that it brings unto thee, you shalt be punished!"

What say then?

It would have pretty much twisted the lesson. If the knowledge we had gained from the rock was simply a greater knowledge of the good we already knew so much about, all we would have learned is that disobedience is met with punishment. Which, by the way, disobedience does not always lead to punishment. Indeed, sometimes in this world doing the wrong thing can be beneficial, at least temporarily.

Answered simply: If it hadn't been a knowledge of evil that the rock contained, the lesson we learned from it would have ultimately been a lie. It had to be the knowledge of sin within the rock. Nothing else would have worked."

Out of ideas...

2 years 10 months ago

"Well, your wallpaper definitly didn't get rejected because of a poor composition. That's fine. What it looks like you did was set the compression rate way too high, or you saved it multiple times and compressed it further each time. That's why you're getting all that noise on the face and pretty much everywhere else. What you need to do is go back to your .psd file and export it again. Only this time, set the file compression much lower.

Also, your text is a little rough. Try and smooth it some."

do you like watching old movies?

2 years 10 months ago

"Well, yeah, I suppose it depends on the movie. Those old "Road to..." movies with Bob Hope and... who was that other guy? Bing Crosby, I think. And when winter comes along, I always watch "White Christmas" with my folks. Bing, again, with Sinatra this time (I think that's who it was).

Every once in awhile I catch my parents watching some old musical drama and I enjoy it with 'em. Why don't we have movies like that anymore?"

Why do we have knowledge when we are denied of it?

2 years 10 months ago

"
Omnidevil
There can be a few reasons however, but it all comes down to the Wise man:

refusing to teach the apprentice
refusing knowledge cause he prides it over himself having everything
refusing cause he fears the future, which he shall create from the past
refusing the knowledge cause he knows that it WILL be in the wrong hands (provided he is God)
refusing the knowledge because he thinks we can't handle it (which in any case, should have not been there)
refusing the knowledge cause he fears we become smarter than him.

All this reason shows pride and jeaulousy (part of the original sins)

Is God Sinful? Yes.

Omnidevil, you don't have all the possibilities, and so have arrived at your conclusion too soon. Please, allow me to express my viewpoint.

isominds
But if you think about it, from the story Adam and Eve, they are new beings, new to everything. "Innocent" in a way. I do not think any person with an ounce of good judgement would cut off the hand of a child taking something without permission if they didn't know what they were doing. Would you as a 3yr old be able to resist trying something new if someone said it was ok even though your parent said you're forbidden to do it? Children are naturally curious and gullible and they don't know who they can trust.

^^^We have a genius here, he just doesn't realize it.

I am the wise man, an elder omnipotent who knows all things. You are my apprentice, a young lad aged twelve, completely without knowledge or wisdom. I have placed a rock containing all of my knowledge and demanded that you not touch it. Why is it that I refuse you knowledge, yet present you with a means to harness it? Why also, is it that despite my omniscience and my omnipotence, I do not interfere when you go to touch this rock. I was obviously more then capable of stopping you. And afterward, when I come to you and you hide yourself from me (for this is what occured in the story of Adam and Eve) do I pretend I do not know where you are or what you have done?

You're a child, so you wouldn't have known enough yet, but I wanted you to touch that rock. It was not a test, it was a lesson.

Back to reality for a moment, I remember my mother teaching me when I was four not to touch something that would burn me. I didn't know what burning was, except as a rather abstract concept, so wasn't really sure what she was doing. But she knew. My mother placed a heated curling iron on the bathroom counter, instructed me not to touch it, and then left the room. I, being a predictable child, wrapped my hand around it and felt oh-so shocked and betrayed when I was burned. Why would my mother place such a harmful thing in my presence and then tempt me to touch it!? When she heard me cry out, she came back, and asked me what had happened. I skipped the explanation and questioned her about her motives, but she simply feined anger and pressed the iron into my hand again, holding it there for several seconds.

Cruel, yes, but I never forgot that lesson, and I earned more than simple knowledge from it. I gained wisdom.

God (a.k.a. the wise man) did the same thing with the apple to Adam and Eve. Or haven't you noticed that God teaches through equal parts love and pain? Having allowed Adam and Eve to walk through Eden for hundreds of years, learning of peace and innocence, of calmness and tranquility, he had taught them much by the means of love. But there were two things that man had to learn for themselves, through unpleasent means brought on through his allowance. Wisdom, and knowledge of evil.

Because, when the bible refers to mankind over and over again as the "Children of God," it is describing his relationship with us. He is trying to teach us, to allow us to mature into fullgrown beings, adults on a cosmic level. Sometimes there is a lesson that can only be taught one way. This is why pain and punishment was introduced to us.

Omnidevil, your analogy between God and a wiseman was incredibly accurate. For, if I am back to referring to the wiseman as "I," then I am a strict teacher, but like a father to my student. I tell you over and over again that I love you, but sometimes my methods of teaching you are so extreme and difficult that you find it hard to believe. This is because you cannot understand that this is the only way for me to truly teach you. When I placed that rock before you, I knew that your curious and unwise nature would drive you to seek it out, and when I punished you I gave you the gift of wisdom, demonstrating that there are actions which seem like a good idea, but can have negative consequences. I never meant to withhold my knowledge from you, but you must understand that knowledge and wisdom are of equal importance. And giving you one without the other would have confused and twisted you, like it did my former apprentice Lucifer (who recieved limitless knowledge, but no wisdom, and so became the devil). You do not yet understand these things, apprentice, but one day you will.

Great topic, by the way."

New Tifa FFVII wall

2 years 10 months ago

"You need a better composition. I've got no problem with empty backgounds - it's not bad, just basic - but you need to lead the eye elegantly from wherever it's caught to wherever it's going. In this wall, the eye is first attracted to the lion in the back, then to Tifa's overexaggereated nipples (being blunt), and then to her face. If I were you, I'd adjust one element - probably the text since it's getting completely overlooked, to draw attention away from her breasts to over her shoulder. That will make the composition more elegant.

I hope I've helped."

"Ushinatta, the background is chock-full of filters.

Everyone, thanks for the critiques and the help. I guess I was the only person that liked those wavey buildings, and I'm surprised that I hadn't noticed I was using red highlights on the character when the source-light was obviously yellow.

Alright, changes made: I'm now using straight buildings, I softened the choppy lines on the scan, I did some minor tweaking in the background lighting, I changed the highlight colour on the scan to an orange-yellow, and I added what I hope is unobtrusive text.

I had been fighting adding text all this time, but I guess I'm okay with the way I did it. Piekny is a beautious phrase, anyway.

"My point is a finicky one. Those birds simply wouldn't be silhouetted black in such good lighting. I recommend making them white instead, as that's the colour gulls would be, anyway, and it's more believable to think that they're reflecting bright light than no light at all.

Other than that, you're dandy."

"Sorry, not much better. One way to add depth would be to add something behind the background, whatever you think would work, and then try and make your existing background look like a semi-transparent pane of expressionist glass, through which you can see, just barely, that other thing behind.

If I were you, I'd give that a go."

Ghost in the Shell (updated WIP)

"Thanks for the input. I'm not sure about how much of what yer sayin' I'll actually do (definitely gonna clean up the scan now that someone pointed it out), but I thank y'all just the same.

That sun was cut from a photograph. Looked a little oblong to me, too, but not much, and since it was from a real-life snapshot I had figured it was just me. Maybe next time I'll go with my gut and fix it from step one, eh?

As for the black on the bottom, I see what you mean, but I really do love the wallpaper's basics as they stand and don't want to introduce too many new elements. Though, it's obvious to me now that something has to be done. What I might end up doing (just an idea off the top of my wanting head) is to drop the entire background down so that the sun ends up around her stomach, and then fill out the sky with brush effects like Clarings suggested.

I'll be putting in some work on this, for sure.

*EDIT: Alright, I put in more work and changed a lot. Still a WIP, but here's what I have. More thoughts, please. The last few helped a ton.

"Well, everything's been said already. I also like it, but I can see why it was dropped, I think. Fix what's already been said and you should be golden. But if you want a point of advice, I'd say, make the letters have depth. Yep, that's right, make 'em 3d. Just slightly. Box letters, like they teach you to draw in elementary school. It'll make her look like she's actually leaning up against something."

"I don't see what you're not confident about. The composition is good, background and forground mix nicely, typography is sound. Only thing I see is pixelation on the edges of the scan of the children. Well, acutally, maybe that's not a scan at all. It looks like it could have been made in vector.

Well, either way, if you want this to be perfect it's gotta be fixed, which isn't alway the easiest thing to do. Short of just taking a soften brush and spending an hour or two maticulously picking apart the youths, there is this one trick I know of that works about half the time. Instructions follow, if you care to try.

Put as simply as I can, just go into Photoshop and isolate all the layers that make up those two young'uns, then duplicate them into a new document, blur, copy and place the whole lot back on top of the original document as a new layer. At this point you should have a blurred pictured of those kids as your top layer. Lastly, position the clones directly over the originals, set the layer to blend at "Luminance (Legacy)" and drop the opacity to 50%. This should help some, though you'll probably still have to take a soften brush to some parts of the hair and that girl's fan. But, if all goes well, you should cut your cleaning time to about 10 minutes or so.

I hope I put that plainly enough. I'm not very good at giving instructions.

*EDIT: I'd like to point out, even if you don't fix the pixelation on the kids, this wallpaper is still far more than aweosme."
