Story (minimal spoilers for the first 30 mins or so of the game ^^)
Ashley Riot is a VKP agent called a Riskbreaker send to a city called Lea Monde to stop the Mullencamp (might have spelled wrong) cult leader Sidney. Within Lea Monde, Ashley showly remembers a past event that he sealed away within his heart while chasing Sidney throughtout the city. Ashley isn't the only one after Sidney, the Crimson Knights are also after him for the "key" to the city...
Gameplay
I have to say VS's combat system is unlike any I've seen before and after. VS is an action RPG/puzzle and there is no "going into another screen for turn based battle kinda thing", Ashley will have 2 modes for gameplay. First mode is "Normal Mode", this is where Ashley's weapons are put away and are free to climb/hang on edges and move boxes around. In "Battle Mode", Ashley have his weapon out and depending on range of the weapon, when you initial the action button, an attack sphere is appear. Any enemies within the attack sphere can be attacked, most enemies have multiple body parts that you can choose to hit. Each body part have it's own weakness and hit percentage.
The weapon system is great for this game. Unlike traditional RPGs where you earn money to build better weapons and armors, there is no money system in VS. You get new/stronger weapons through chests and defeating enemies. Everything an enemy has equiped can be yours if you're lucky enough for them to drop after they're defeated except a few bosses where it is impossible to get their equipment. When you have 2 or more weapons/armors/shields, you can combine them to get a stronger (in terms of material and blade type, there are 6 material types for weapons: bronze, iron, hagane, silver, and damascus. 7 for armors: leather, bronze, iron, hagane, silver, and damascus. 7 for shields: wood, bronze, iron, hagane, silver, and damascus), sometimes weaker, weapon/armor/shields types and material. You can only get the game's strongest armor and weapons through combining many many many many blades (the best polearm can take up to 700+ blades of certain type and material to make on the first playthrough).
I don't have much to say about the graphics, but to me, they're great considering it's a PS1 game and was released sometime in 2000 or 2001.
This game is also one of the few games that got a perfect 40/40 rating on a respectable japanese gaming magazine (Famitsu or something I forgot)"
