The amount of patience, hard work and an eye for quality is what defines this wallpaper. Character is painstakingly vectored off a real life toy image with references to screenshots. Despite the difficulty level, ~pvc24 still manages to nicely depict the image in anime fashion and yet able to find the mental strength to come up with a background composition that is both aptly fun and pleasant in atmosphere.

"This is some really awesome work for your first vector! Just looking over it quickly, I noticed this.

I was just wondering if this is one of the things you meant by "just some small adjustments left". Besides that, it's looking really good, keep it up!"

Advices for a first vecto

"Ah, now that I can compare them, you really did a great job vectoring it! I think I see what you mean about the eye though... In the original scan, the bottom half of the eye seems to be light blue, and you have it as white. However, I'm not sure how much that would help it... I'd suggest just zooming in really close and redoing it very carefully. I know that's not much help, but I can't really find any technical problem with it, which makes offering suggestions a little difficult ^^;

If you make any changes, be sure to post it; I'd like to see it!"

"Well, I'm not sure what anime this is, and without the scan to look at, I can't really tell how "correct" it is.

However, I do have a few suggestions you may or may not want to consider. First, the hair-clip-thing at the very top has a broken line. That shouldn't be too hard to fix ^^

Second, you used a darker shade of the same color to outline the hair, but there seems to be a strand of hair above the ear of the girl on the right that is outlined in black.

Lastly, (and this is just kind of a personal taste thing) you might want to do the same thing for all the lines (have them be a darker shade of the color they're outlining). It doesn't look bad with the black lines, but kind of gives... I dunno... a lot of contrast? Changing them in this way would give a softer feel to the image and personally I think it would look better.

Anyway, you've done a really great job on this! It looks really good - you should make it into a wallpaper! ^^"

"I think the colors look great and that this will be a wonderful addition to your series!

Just a small thing I noticed though, in her hair at the top of the wall are a few parts where the color comes outside of the lines. Not really a big thing, but I thought I'd let you know since I caught it.

"When I cut stuff out, I usually use the pen tool (I'm a big fan of the pen tool haha). Just copy the scan layer and trace along the outside of the outline of the character, then go way off to the side and come back to the beginning (you're basically making a line around what you want to cut out) then you can right-click and do "Make Selection" and hit delete.

Other people use polygonal lasso tool or a soft eraser, but you just have to find what you're most comfortable with. Also, if the edges still look too hard after you've cut it out, there's a little trick that might help.

Control+click on your extracted scan layer in the layers menu. This selects everything on the layer, namely, your scan. Go to Select > Modify > Contract and contract by 1 or maybe 2 pixels. Then do Select > Inverse, followed by Select > Feather by 1 pixel, then hit delete. This should give a softer edge around the scan (if I typed everything correctly haha). I wouldn't advise using this too much though, as it can make the scan look a little blurry.

Well, I hope what I said helped, and good luck with your wall!"

"I really like the concept you've got, and what you've got so far is pretty good. But like Zazou said, the silhouettes are really jagged and still have white pixels on them.

I don't know what program you use, but what I'd do in Photoshop is make a new layer and trace over the scans with the pen tool, then just fill the area with black. That'll give you a nice clean edge around the characters.

Anyway, keep it up! I think you've got a really great idea here!"

"Hopefully your actual version is bigger than 800x600 and photobucket resized it. If that's the case, upload it to ImageShack (not ImageSharck ^^) and repost a link.

As far as commenting on the actual wall itself, I like the theme, and the text works well. However, it seems a bit cluttered with the two scans. Maybe just one or the other (I like the one on the right) would draw your attention more, especially if you made the face a bit more visible. Good job, keep it up!"

"There's a faint gray outline visible around her hair and parts of her dress that make it look like a cutout. I'd clean that up a bit as it seems extraction is a very important part of walling here, and also, on the right side of the wall, it looks like the grass is poking through her dress; just looks kind of awkward. Otherwise it's a great-looking wall!"

"Wow, has nobody mentioned The Pillows? They're definitely an awesome band and one of the reasons FLCL is as cool as it is, in my opinion.

Other bands I listen to (kind of in order of most favorite, but it really depends on my mood): Janne da Arc, Porno Graffitti, L'Arc~en~Ciel, Morning Musume, The Brilliant Green, KOTOKO, Asian Kung-Fu Generation, Otsuka Ai, Megumi Hayashibara, Ayumi Hamasaki, Utada Hikaru, and TM Revolution. Benemin, I'd recommend anyone in that list, and most definitely The Pillows or Janne da Arc. They totally rock my socks."

"I'm not sure if this is intentional or not, but the pink part of her sleeve turns blue when it's not over her arm/outfit. About the background, you might try to slightly vary the shades of blue in the main circle (where they're all the same color). Otherwise it looks great!"

"It looks like you've made a lot of progress with this, but the thing I want to comment on is the text. I'm not exactly sure due to the font you used, but it looks like you wrote "It is becouse we love memories..." and should be "because". If that is an "a" on there, then I guess just ignore me haha (but it looks very similar to the other o's in the text).

Anyway, good luck with your wall!"

"The wall looks really good, however, the image of Luffy on the right seems to have a few problems with the extraction. There are a few places where there is a faint white outline (such as around his arms and the bottom part of his foot). Also, there's a white spot between his arm and the bracelet that was not extracted. This could be the reason for rejection (but I'm definitely not a gallery mod so don't take my word for it). It's too bad you lost the PSD; I'm sure that with a little work this would make it. Anyway, good luck on your next wall!"

"Thanks for the comments everyone!

mellykill
there's just too much and not enough going on in your bg right now at the same time.

Haha, I feel the same way, but I couldn't seem to put it into words.

Okay, so I've moved the text up; it really was too low from a design standpoint. I've toned down the background a bit so that more of the photo shows through (it actually was a picture of sky to start out with) and changed the bottom right corner. I couldn't think of any kind of image that I could put in that would look good while fitting the wallpaper theme and go with the series, so I added another white curvy shape. I think that it really helps to put focus on the scan. Also, I've got versions with and without the foreground. Of course, I'd like for as much of the scan to show as possible, but I'm not sure if removing that takes away too much or not.

Edit: I forgot to make note of another change. I recolored the outlines so that they're a darker shade of what they're outlining (instead of flat black). I think it makes a lot of difference.

"Hello everyone!

It's been a while since I've made a wallpaper, and I'd really like to get your thoughts on this one. I've spent quite a long time on this, as the scan was completely redone in Photoshop with the pen tool (and a little eraser). My main concern is the background. I've kind of been drawing a blank on it, even though I had an idea of what I wanted it to look like when I started. Right now, it's a stock photo with a few filters on it, lots of brushing on top of that, and the curvy line with text above it. Maybe the problem I have with it is that it took a fraction of the time the main image did, haha.

Anyway, if you have a suggestion, I'd love to hear it. In my opinion, the background looks rather plain at this point, and although I like it, I guess I'm not quite satisfied with it. Please tell me what you think! Thanks!

"All wallpapers need to have a sig on them that clearly shows a relationship to your username on AP. It's all outlined on in the submission guide in the FAQ, and if you haven't read it, I really recommend it. You wouldn't want your wallpaper to get rejected because of it not having a sig or being the wrong resolution. Which, by the way, it seems that your wallpaper is 1240x1024 which is not in the list of accepted resolutions ^^; 1280x1024 is pretty close though, so that should be easy to fix. Anyway, good luck with your submission! ^^"

Spontaneous Human Combustion

2 years 3 months ago

"Well, it's never been proven to actually exist, but there have been several cases where spontaneous human combustion is the alleged cause of death. There seem to be two hypotheses on how it actually happens: the wick effect, the melting and combustion of body fat, and the static flash fire effect, the buildup of great amounts of static electricity which cause clothing to combust.
Wikipedia has a really interesting entry on the subject, with common misconceptions as well as the supposed cases of it."

Cosplaying

2 years 3 months ago

"I think it would be fun, but I'd only do it if I had the time and money to make a really good-looking costume. I've seen pictures of people who make costumes that are exactly like the ones in the anime, and I think that's really cool. But if I didn't spend a lot of time making a costume, getting all the little details right, I don't think I'd do it.

Something a little bit similar I guess is a yearly Renaissance festival I go to. I'm working on a Templar knight "costume" that I'm trying to make as accurately as possible. Chainmail making is actually a hobby of mine, so I'm going all-out because I want it to look as authentic as possible. I guess this is the same way serious cosplayers feel about anime conventions."

"You've already got some good advice for the artistic aspects of the wall, and you've got a really good start so far. One thing that I'll add though is that 1100x850 isn't an acceptable resolution. That's pretty close to 1152x864 though, which is an acceptable size, so it shouldn't be too hard to change that. Other acceptable resolutions can be found here Good luck!"

"It looks really good, I agree with Same-Eric. You've extracted the scan really well, and I like the relative simplicity you've used. The only things that I can think of are that the text is a little big, with the word on top being slightly hard to read. Also, I wonder what it would look like if you put some of those blue swirls in the blank spot between his legs (it's in the bar with the rest of it, but it's all white). But I think it looks good as-is; great job!"

Chrno Crusade Wall

"I was thinking about adding a rosary somewhere on it, but I wasn't sure if it would look okay. Like, should I find a stock image and just extract/clean it up, or should I make one in Photoshop? And if I draw one out, would it look better cel-shaded or soft-shaded?
I used that font on the sig so that it could be read easily. The sig should be covered by the taskbar so it won't normally be seen, but I'll see if I can get it to blend a little better.
Nanook, which font do you mean? The writing on the photo, the "carved" words in the desk, or the sig text?

Thanks for the encouraging comments everyone, I'll work on it!"

"I've always thought that the wallpapers that looked like a photo on a desk were kind of cool. This wall started out being slightly more "regular" but I wanted to know what it would look like with sepia toning, and I really liked it. The transition to it becoming an old photo followed soon afterwards, and then I added the wood grain for it to sit on. I had the idea to add the carved words at the very end, so please tell me if you think they look okay or not. I know it's not the most unique idea but I think it came out pretty well ^_^;
The quote written on the photo is from the English dialogue in the episodes - I don't think Rosette says that in the original Japanese, but I thought it fit the picture.
Anyway, please tell me what you think! Thanks~!
