This wallpaper captures the urban essence that proliferated the art of Ghost in the Shell in every incarnation of the series. Phill does an amazing job of capturing a moment of surrealism.

While there are a few, stray building angles and shadows, you find that your eye forgives the minor details and instead focuses on the overall scene that is larger than life, with lights trailing off into infinity.

Premature Marriage

*looks at his wife in her Rainbow Brite pajamas*

Well . . . *ahem* . . . My wife was 23 when we got married, and I was 27. She was fighting with every ounce of her being to hold off her rabid grandmother. Her grandmother was full of distress when Stella did not have a marriage proposal by the time she was 18, because it's a well known fact in Japan that a woman gets harder to control as she gets older, so men are not as interested in older women.
*BAH!* I can't even stand being in the same room with a teenager when they are in a bad mood. I could not imagine being married to one.
Further to the waiting until you are married thing, I have yet another rule in my house. We have to be married for five years before we can have a child. Stella wants to have three children (sisters and a boy "for me"), and wants to have a baby right now if I would relent. I think we should get to know each other *even better* before we commit to bringing a tiny, helpless human into our home. It's just a little insurance policy for our unborn nugget . . . making sure that he/she does not enter a home in which his/her parents are not raging lunatics with a grudge or problems with authority. That would mean that Stella would be 28 and I would be 32 at the time our first child is born (or even older). That would be awesome.
I never even thought about marriage before I was 25. Marriage is a mixture of a business arrangement, a promise of fidelity, and a commitment to not kill each other. If the person you are going to get married to is not a sound business partner, virtuous beyond your reproach, and totally adverse to killing you for any reason . . . reconsider. There's always "blissful co-habitation"!

Regards, Aaron

I definitley agree with the waiting for children thing. Jesse and I [He's 24 and I'm nearly 22] are waiting untill we're compleltey finished with school before we make it official and tie the knot, but even so, we're going to wait a while to have children.

And I am most definitley all for blissful co-habitation! As far as I can see there is no difference between what we're doing now and what marriage will be like...we work together around the house and pay our bills, and spend tons of time getting to know each other and spend time together. I love him very dearly [sigh]

'kay, I'm done."

Premature Marriage

1 year 8 months ago

"As far as young marriages in ye olden days, not only were people actually living and working at sixteen, often younger girls who were married at sixteen and younger were often brought into arranged marriages by both groups of parents, so often these unions were not based on any kind of concrete previous relationship on the part of the bride and groom. Therefore there was no "Oh but I hardly know you!" kind of reaction...you weren't really expected to.

I feel like when children [which is how I see the pair that you mentioned] wish to get married at such a young age it is a very foolish idea. First of all, no matter how well you THINK you know yourself at any age, your brain doesn't even myelinize untill you reach the age of about 24, meaning that the concrete paths of neurons in your brain aren't fully formed untill then. Short and sweet explanation: you don't become the person you're going to become until that point in life or later. Untill then, your brain and your personality is a constantly changing growing and fluctuating entity.

So why bring all this up? Because taking that all into consideration, having people marry before that can prove to be disastrous. Yes, you may be truly lucky and find that you ended up wedding the person you truly want to spend the rest of your life with. But what you want out of life is going to change so much even within a year when you are still going through adolescence, that it is unlikley that the person you end up waking up next to is truly the one you would have chosen had you known yourself better."

forgotten something??

1 year 8 months ago

"I often have moments when I forget things, zone out, or just stop paying attention to what's going on around me and then forget where I put things or what I was doing. It was annoying to my family when I was younger, and it was only untill I was older that a huge part of it had to do with ADD. No, I am not trying to gain sympathy or sound cool because of a psychiatric disorder, merely expressing that a big part of having it means that because you're paying attention to so many different things at once it's often easy to forget what you were orginally focusing on. Nor am I saying that all of you who forget things have ADD...absolutley not. Fortunatley it's still more of an annoyance than a hinderance, making it simply a way of living rather than a disorder.

I can live with that. :3"

Animal Cruelty?

1 year 8 months ago

"Teaching animals to do as they're told and training them to behave in ways that are beneficial to them and to us is not in any way wrong. As it has been said before, it is no more wrong to train them than it is to teach a child to behave and interact with other people. Perhaps the biggest difference is that since animals have a much more limited capability of understanding human speech, sometimes light physical force must be used to convey the same message that simple instructions could convey with a child. Of course, there are other positive renvorcements that can be used as well, and should be used in conjunction. And of course it makes no sense setting a domestic animal free in the name of allowing it to live out it's life naurally any more than it makes sense leaving a human out in the wilderness and expecting them to easily survive. Domesticated animals, unlike wild animals depend on humans for shelter, food and interaction; they were bred to be that way. Depriving them of it would be more cruel than training them to better interact with the humans who care for them."

Is club a harmful place?

1 year 8 months ago

"I would never go out to a club to drink because the risk is far too high that your drink could get drugged or that you drink too much or dehydrate...Nor would I ever pick up a date there because you just don't know who these people are, not to mention it's so hard to get to know people in that kind of party atmosphere. My ideal would be to go dancing the night away with my boyfriend so I could have fun without people being assholes and trying to do stupid things."

Online/Long Distance Relationships

1 year 8 months ago

"They take a good deal of time and hard work and dedication and when I say a LOT I mean a lot.

If a relationship starts long distance, sometimes it's easier to maintain it that way because you're used to being apart for long periods of time...But sometimes the times that you're together make the times apart absolutley unbearable.

On the flip side, if a relationship doesn't start long distance but becomes that way, it's so much harder to keep together. When you go away to college, relationships fall apart left and right because so many people can't deal with the distance. It doesn't mean that they're bad people or that they don't still love each other, but rather that they're human and need somone's love and affection more often then they can have it.

If the love is true, sometimes it's worth waiting over time and space to be with your loved one. But it's not an easy lifestyle, and it's definitley not for everyone."

Is it Worth It

"It's never too early to learn about the true value of money. Getting a job when you're younger helps you appreciate how much work it takes to make money, and therefore whether or not something is worth spending your money on. Not to mention budgeting skills definitley don't grow overnight, and when you get to college you're going to have to put those skills to practical use, if not sooner."

1. for those who believe in 'nothing' that we'll just rot in the ground, that we have no soul...etc
WHY do you you believe that? how can you? HOW can you say you dont believe in God? if you were to be right then are you saying we're nothing but animals? cause thats what your saying. lemme guess we "evolved" from monkeys right? if we "evolved" from monkeys then why are monkeys still around? why arnt they people?

Oh leave it to me to focus on the tangents...

The reason that the animals we evolved from "still exist" is because the specific monkeys we evolved from BECAME US. Just because the first bird evolved into the millions of species that exist today doesn't mean that birds of different types no longer exist. They have traveled along different parts of the evolutionary stream. Just in the same way the prehistoric ape that became the human we know today evolved, but other members of the ape family still exsist. Just become something evolves doesn't mean that every other animal related to it dissapeasrs."

do you think homosexuals should marry?

1 year 8 months ago

"But that's what we call discrimination. Making things uncessary difficult or inacessible to a person because of their sexual orientation. If you had a bi-racial couple trying to get married and used the same logic, you would be pinned as a racist, because that kind of action is discriminatory.

Same sex couples SHOULD NOT have to "work harder" simply to be married. And it has nothing to do with "working at their relationship." Discrimination of this type has no place in a world that is supposedly evolved and advanced to a point beyond this. If people don't like it or think that it's wrong then FINE I can live with that. But do NOT deny people the rights that any human being should have for a reason like that."

So basically because SOME people believe in God, if you're gay and the person you decided to spend your life with dies, then everything that the two of your worked together to have...a home, car, whatever, all of it gets left to the family instead of you.

Lena is right, I hope you never breed.

What? That doesn't make any sense. They can just leave it in their will when they decide that they want to spend the rest of their life together. It's as simple as that.

There. Problem solved.

Unless one of them is killed suddenly when they're in their thirties, because most people don't draw up a will until they're older. Are YOU planning on having a will drawn up when youre 30? I don't think so...Of course, they could always spell it out in the pre-nuptual...Oh, that's right, they can't get married. Damn. It's like everywhere there's a wall.

Try again."

Homosexuals should not marry.

They can love each other, of course. And they can spend their lives together if they so chose, but they cannot marry. Marriage is a legally binding ceremony between a man and a woman. And that's it.

Homosexuals can just not have a legally binding relationship.

I think the key words in this phrase are 'legally binding'. I don't understand why marriage is nothing more than legal bondage here. It's between people who love each other. If you're saying that people who are gay can still love each other and spend their lives together, and that's the definiteion of marriage, then by saying that you're contradicting yourself in my view.

I think before we go any further, someone needs to find the true concept of marriage. THEN we can discuss and judge how people go about or who does it.

Technically that is not what marriage is. Marriage is the social institution under which a man and woman establish their decision to live as husband and wife by legal commitments, religious ceremonies, etc. Marriage is man and woman. Husband and wife. So, I didn't contradict myself.

But that is what homosexual couples wants. They want the legally binding part. To make decisions for each other. To live for one another because that is what marriage is.

But this is where God comes in. I am not Catholic. I do not believe in God. I'm basically agnostic. But in this world there are millions of people who believe God /does indeed/ exist. You just can't ignore that. There is something there that makes people believe God exists.

And following into that virtually my whole family is Catholic. I was brought up Catholic but I moved away from it as I got older. Now I don't believe in it at all, but that's another story.

Anyway, in going with this up-bringing I don't believe in same-sex marriage. That isn't the defenition of marriage. Marriage is a man and a woman as defined by God himself (who may or may not exist ><). That is it . Period.

Some people try to bring other parts in the Bible to defend same-sex marriage. God forgive everyone, God loves us all, God want's us to be happy.

No. It doesn't work that way. God created a woman for man. That is how god works.

Of course, our society's sense of marriage today is so entirely skewed it doesn't even matter anymore. People, now, get married just for the sake of getting married. In truth I find this more annoying than same-sex marriages.

All I'm saying is that it was predestined from basically the beginning of time for it to be a man and a woman. That's the way it was. That's the way it should. END. OF. STORY.

So basically because SOME people believe in God, if you're gay and the person you decided to spend your life with dies, then everything that the two of your worked together to have...a home, car, whatever, all of it gets left to the family instead of you.

Lena is right, I hope you never breed."

Heaven and Hell

1 year 8 months ago

"Sounds like our thread starter had their first taste of Dante's Inferno...Such a great piece of literature.

No, I don't believe in hell, I'm not quite sure if I believe in heavan. In fact, I don't know which of the three ideas scares me more: eternal nothingness, if neither of them exist; eternal pain and torture, if hell exists; or an enternity of worship and purity of thought and body if heavan exsists.

What I like to think is kind of like what Piers Anthony described in On A Pale Horse...If you truly believe that there is nothing waiting for you in the afterlife then your soul and spirit will desintegrate and you will truly die. If you have a greater sprituality beyond that, then that is what you will experience. I beleive that my soul will continue to be reincarnated, and search out my one true love each and every time because that is what I want it to do. But this is an ideal, and an ideal I have a hard time grasping because the more pragmatic side of my brain tells me to believe the more scientific explanations...Hopefully before I die I'll learn to get over that so I can take advantage of what my last moments of conciousness will be like...

You should all see Waking Life. It brings up an interesting point: How time when you dream goes by much more quickly then time in the real world, and therefore you can have essentially hours and hours of dreamtime in only a few minutes of "real-time" Now, scientists have determined that there are 5-6 seconds of brain activity that continue after your body actually dies, which is, essentially, dreamtime...which you could possibly percieve as an infitinite time, or even your entire afterlife. It would explain all the experiences people in the OR have, claiming to have seen a glimpse of what was to come when they were so close to dying. In reality what they were seeing were the last fleeting charges coursing through their brain.

So, in conclusion, you can make it whatever you want."
