i actually have had this discussion quite a bit lately lol
i find myself to be a "whatever" gamer. by whatever, i mean if it's fun, i'll play it. hell, if they came out with a good barney game, i'd play it. i have pokemon red, and silver, both ofwhich i played, and beat. people complain that they're easy...but remember, nintendo made them for kids. so, of course they're going to be easy. it's an RPG, and a massive one. it's funny, because radiata stories, as much as i love it, made a big deal over there being 150 people you could recruit onto your team. pokemon has gone well beyond 250. and to think they can keep coming out with these critters and usually, they don't look alike (unless they're evolved forms...which would make sense)
now, i'm not a diehard pokemon fan. i enjoy the games for their sheer fun. i don't watch the cartoon obsessivly, but if it's on, and theres nothing else on, why not? it's a cartoon. theres very few cartoons i won't watch.
i thikn the cartoon going on as long as it has is yes, overkill. it should have ended a while ago, but if kids enjoy it, and thats what it's for, kids, why not keep them happy? the games people bitch about being the same thing over and over again. and again, it's for kids. why would you take a game, with a formula that works beautifully for who it's geared for (again...kids) and change it. if a child has played the first 3 pokemon games which have the same concept, and then nintendo goes and changes everything, a lot of kids would get frustrated and leave it off. i don't mean to say that kids don't like a challange or to learn new things, but nintendo knows it works. so leave it the way it is. if children started bitching about it, they'd probably change it. but since it's not geared for us, we can have our opinions on it, but to nintendo, they're gonna want to hear that the kids that play are happy, not the hardcore gamers are.
and in terms of graphics, they do exactly what they're supposed to. they're light and fun adn cartoony. young kids like that stuff. it apeals to them. if you made this uber pokemon game that was super realistic and starred a character that was rendered as nice someone from FFXII, they could get intimidated. what happened to the fun fluff that pokemon was?
pokemon is like any other childs cartoon. the difference is it has such a wide range of toys and such that could be made, why wouldn't you? it's like batman. everyone knows batman and his 164382809 action figures, lunch boxes, batmobiles, clothes, trading cards, etc. (although his videogames tend to suck. hard) pokemon is the same way, except it swept the nation in a different way.
anyways, pokemon is what it is. if kids get tired of it, it'll die. it's not as hardcore as it was. it's settled down which is good to see. but it's not dead yet.
of course it's to make money. but theres also the aspect of seeing kids smile. and thats in any industry with children. theres nothing like making something like a toy, or cartoon and getting a positive reaction from it. it feels rewarding and good, and makes you feel succesful. where am i going with this...? oh yeah...kids flocking over pokemon makes the company feel succesful, and they'll wanna hold onto that as long as they can.
anyways, pokemon is a kids game, so unless we're little kids anything we say would technically be meaningless.

No they did not make the same mistake as Pokemon as to have every shrub and acorn become a monster, but then the 4th season with the kids themselves transforming into digimons was too weird. It wasn't even a fusion thing.. They TRANSFORMED.. Well my favorite was the 3rd season.. DIGIMODIFY! XD Renemon kicked ass and her partner was a hardcore kickass girl unlike the girly and somewhat useless predecessors. (Come on they never went Mega AND were ALWAYS backup...) In the third season the story was a lot deeper and because there were only three main characters, they were all important. Henry with that stuffed animal looking one on his head all the time in public was adorable. Ah and the shades.. ^^; MOMUNTAI! Card games.. Gotta love card games and rookie forms that can make champions like Greymon pee on himself (Renemon OWNZ!)

Oh yeah, did I mention I'm a fan? XD I stopped after watching half the 4th season...
