This wallpaper captures the urban essence that proliferated the art of Ghost in the Shell in every incarnation of the series. Phill does an amazing job of capturing a moment of surrealism.

While there are a few, stray building angles and shadows, you find that your eye forgives the minor details and instead focuses on the overall scene that is larger than life, with lights trailing off into infinity.

Final Fantasy 12

"The demo is nothing like the full game, don't even bother playing it.

I have the import, I've played it, I love it, I've beaten it at least a dozen times, the only thing I didn't do was kill the last two, uber hard, optional bosses.

People have slammed the gambit system because it "lets the game play itself" Umm... yeah. I'd like to see someone try to walk away from their controller while playing this, escpecially in some of the later areas.

Honestly, its more like Dragon Quest 8, but in real time, but the gambits (the macro system) has so much more depth that that. Its not just simply "use no magic" its, when poisoned use antidote, if monster is flying use far attack, when monster is near death use poach. You can have all those commands and others active on any character.

The only catch is, in order to use a gambit, you character must have learned the ability to use it, and you must have bought, or found the gambit command.

And for those who think that having all your characters perform their actions by themselves, you CAN turn the gambits off and play the game on the fly. Just make sure you have the game in "wait mode" (the game pauses when you menu is open) or else the baddies won't wait for you."

Best Breath of Fire? Worst?

"Wow, all the BoF 2 hate surprises me. Personally, I really liked BoF 2, it gave me everything I liked about BoF 1, and then added a bunch more.

I always thought that BoF 1's story was rather thin, and yeah, the translation on 2 stank, but for me, BoF 3 is my least favorite. Why? It takes forever to start really going anywhere, you have to spend so much time leveling in order to get to where you need to go, the fairy ranching sim element was weak, and I really started to hate child Nina and Ryu's voices after awhile. I even imported the PSP version (fyi to anyonw interested: the full English version was released in the UK and you can get it from ncsx.com if you really want it) to see if maybe I could get into it now, and it just didn't work.

My personal favorite is BoF 4. I love the fluidity of the character animations, it has a story that actually goes somewhere, and Ryu has a "brother/rival" who can actualy be threatening.

I'm surprised also that so few people brought up Dragon Quarter. Though it is the one game that totally breaks from the series' mold. I really need to go back and get further into it. The soundtrack by Satoshi Shimizu is easily one of the composer's best too. IMHO anyways. ^_^"

Forgotten Games

Dragon Force for the Sega Saturn was a classic. Basically it was a forgotten game on a forgotten console. This was a game where players were treated to watch battles containing 100 footmen. The art was well done, it was easy to pick up and play and since there were over five generals there was some noticeable replay vaule.

The story while typical in its "Chosen ones save the worlds," is interesting since you see how the game plays out in the eyes of different generals.

If there are any other Saturn owners out there, this is probably a title worth lookin up.

Dang straight Dragon Force was an awesome game, but even better was its sequel, you could split your troop types in it, so you could have, say 50 archers, and the 50 harpies too. One of my most favorite games, I beat it at least four times despite my limited knowledge of Japanese.

Oh, and DF wasn't entirely forgotton, at least not in Japan. It was released on the PS2 as a part of Sega's Sega Ages 2500 line. It features new character designs and new cinemas, along with a remixed soundtrack, but the game engine is just a port from the Saturn.

A forgotten game for me has got to be Shining Force CD, easily the best of the Shining Force SRPGs. Unfortunately Sega just seems to want to give us SF named hack 'n slashes (Shining Tears, Shining Wind) and Gauntlet clones (SF Neo, SF EXA) but no heir to the SF strategy legacy.

Hear me, Sega! Port Shining Force i to the PS2, and this time give us ALL THREE chapters! >_<"

Valkyrie Profile: Lenneth and Silmeria

The game background quality is good enough.but the music beat me down,I feel bored when I played the last section of the game.

Yeah, I love the bachground graphics. I just wish the game supported progressive scan. IMHO there's no reason why Radiata Stories (though I loved that game too) gets progressive scan treatment and VP:S doesn't.

Wow, sorry to hear you didn't like the music. I've actually heard alot of people don't care for it. It's a departure from VP:L, but I thinks its still good nevertheless.

Oh, and Silmeria is a prequel to Lenneth, not a sequel. :)"

suikoden...

"Like many others, 2, 3, and 5 are my favorites.

2 has the best story and music, but 3 has some of the best character developement. The 12th Battalion are my favorite group from 3. As if that wasn't obvious :P (notice my avatar ^^)

And 5 really reminds my of 2 in just about every detail. I love how you get different dialogue if you bring different characters along in certain events. I just got two of the funniest pieces of dialogue in the story yet last night.

And I love the first game too, just not as much as the rest.

And I don't hate 4 either, it was just a big step back from 3 in a lot of ways. But it did have some things I really like, your ship hq, the coolest Silverburg tactician yet (Elenor) Nekobolds (Chiepoo!) and a really good dub. This is the Suikoden that my fellow suiko fan friends of mine like to discuss, namely the fact the the True Runes make their bearers immortal, and yet the Rune of Punishment is a True Rune that kills its bearers. Weird, no?

The only thing that depresses me, is that it seems inevitable that Suikoden 6 will come out on the PS3, and I really don't want that system at all. Maybe I would if I won the lotto... :P"

Who is the best fighter in Guilty Gears X or XX

2 years 1 month ago

"Sol is my number one fave. He's a good blend of speed and power.

Ky is probably the most balanced, but I hate him. Dunno why, I just do.

Jam is a combo machine, but her lack of defense (she reminds me of Strider in MvC, she takes damage too easy) keeps her from being too accessible. She's more of the pro gamer's fighter of choice.

The only bad thing about the GG series, is that some character's are way too powerfull, so they often get the "best" vote. The characters I mean are like, Testament, Dizzy, Justice (why the heck did they make him an unlockable?!) and some could say Sol too, but GGXX toned down alot of his moves, but I hate how they changed their timing. Grrr...

Ino seems to have some pretty powerful moves, but does anyone know how to play her? I sure don't."

What game that you wished you had never bought and why?

Shining Force Neo. Tedious. Repetitive. Slowdowns (and at this point in the PS2's life span...grr). Oh, and the really, really, REALLY bad voice acting. All for $50+ dollars...yeah.

Thank you! I brought that one home, hoping it would be like Shining Tears (so sue me, I like ST :P) and I was like "WTH? Its Gauntlet 64!" But somehow its graphics are worse and the dub will burn your ears off.

Romancing Saga - PS2 Call me a futile optimist. I liked the first Saga Frontier, but this game is beyond redemption. Both this and SF Neo got returned the day after they were bought. Luckily my old manager was working at the EB so he let me fudge the "no opened box" return policy.

Drakengard 2 - PS2 This one's not too horrible, but the one part Dynasty Warriors, one part Panzer Dragoon gameplay left alot to be desired, especially since its game engine is a pale shadow compared to those other two games. At least this one has a good OST.

Metal Dungeon - Xbox I actually still have this one as its one of what, four, Xbox rpgs. But it's a randomly generated dungeon hack, and your characters play themselves. It's not like FFXII where you can change you teamate's actions on the fly, you have to wait until they are about to take their turn and then changed what they do, or else they will continue to do whatever their default action is until the battle is over. Oh, and the battles are slower than FFVII.

Ephermal Phantasia - PS2 Most of the early PS2 software was bad, but this one was terrible. A supposed "musical rpg" I guess because your main character is a bard. The game could be played with the Guitar Freaks controller in the Japanese version. Well, Konami never gave us GF, so that novelty was lost, and what was left was and rpg that had barely passable N64 quality graphics, and monsters that looked like furry lemons with feet. This one was traded in quick.

i actually have a resolution of 2080x1024 on dual monitors [800x600? too on 2nd small monitor]..but yeah primary monitor is 1280x
although i make my artwork at 1600x just because its easier to work on a bigger canvas and shrink it down some...feels less compacted...more room for creativity

Dual monitors! Wow. Is that for work, or for play? I think there are some pc games out there that support dual monitors (maybe?)

Yeah, I kinda figured that 1600 would be easier to work on, although 1600x1200 walls only shrink down to 1280x960 :/.

Personally, I don't do walls because I can't design my way out of a paper bag. I'm an illustrator, not a designer, lol.

But even thinking of wanting to design a wall, or anything at 1600 is enough to send my pc into a seizure. I so, so need a new one. :/

But this kinda confirms my suspicion that alot of people were going to 1280x1024 or 960, whereas ten years ago 1024x768 was the solid norm."

"After commenting or her recent wall, SohoDoll asked me if I knew what the average wallpaper size is here at AP.

Now, I don't have any real idea what that average is, but I have downloaded a fair share of super huge, 1600x1200 walls from here.

So I'm curious to know what kind of resolution many of the members here use, and do you have a widescreen (16:9) monitor, or a standard (4:3) one.

Personally, I have a standard, 4:3, 17" monitor. I sit real close to my monitor (I need a new desk so I can fix that) so I like to run my desktop at 1280x1024, as my closeness to the monitor keeps things from looking too small at that resolution, plus this is my monitor's native resolution.

Can today's pc monitors run at 1600x1200, or is this just a convenient size to built a wall at? I'm honestly not sure, as my pc is many years old (I need a new one ;_;) and I haven't started looking at new ones yet.

So what kind of size do the rest of you run you desktops at?"

Anime games stink

2 years 1 month ago

There's also the Berserk game released a year and a half ago, on PlayStation 2. I played in in japanese, even if I didn't read it, but that's ok since the game follows the events of the manga pretty closely, except for a side story that was added. And the game is pretty good : the graphics are average, but all the characters and place are there, some musics are very good (the intro...), and the battles are very enjoyable, ans you really get the feeling you're holding Guts's huge sword, as it's sometimes hard to control. All in all, a very decent game.

Man, I totally forgot about that one, and I have it in my collection too. Lol! It actually a sorta sequel to the Berserk game that was released on the Dreamcast, which is also a good game.

Someone mentioned Gundam Side Story on the Dreamcast, very good game, but unfortunately we didn't get the expansion disc for it that came out in Japan.

Other notables I can think of:

Macross Do You Remember Love? (import) A fun horizontal shmup (shoot 'em up) released on the Saturn and PS1. Its best played on the Saturn as it plays better on it.

Macross Eternal Love Song (import) The Turbo Grafx16/PC Engine got a crap load of anime based games, but this is one of the best ones. Its Macross, its a turn based strategy game, and your main character is a purple-haired Zentradi woman.

Magic Knight Rayearth -Sega Saturn Do yourself a favor and get the import version, the voice overs are better and the game requires zero knowledge of Japanese to play. Its a wonderfully colorful action RPG that plays like Zelda. Each of the three girls travels along in a group and you can switch between them in order to use their individual skills to solve puzzels, etc.

Record of Lodoss War - Dreamcast: Its sorta a sequel on one hand, and a tie in on the other, the war is over, but Vagnard is still trying to resurrect Khardis. You play a nameless, amnesiac guy, who Wort calls back from the dead, and is played entirely on the Island of Marmo. Great English dub and it looks and plays like Diablo II. Only bad thing is it suffers nasty slowdown when the action heats up. Spoilage:
SPOILER (click to view)

Yu Yu Hakusho (import) Mega Drive: I think this one was programmed by team Treasure (makers of Radiant Silvergun, Ikaruga, etc) it has a four player simultaneous free for all mode that is a blast to play.

Both the third Ranma 1/2 fighting game, and the third Dragonball Z game (also a fighter) for the import SNES are good games.

Both the Shaman King Master of Spirits games (not to be confused with the rpg/pokemon clone releases) are excellent. They play alot like Castlevania: Aria of Sorrow, which blends action with soul collecting.

And for pc: Knights of Zentar This is an H (hentai) RPG. The Dragon Knight OVA is loosely based off of it, so it doesn't really belong in here, but I wanted to add it. If you can find this, now obscure, DOS based H-RPG, get the cd version, the English dialogue is hilarious.

Unfortunately, most companies completely ass out on anime based games, as they are usually meant to be a cash run, and due to this the game is usually totally worthless unless you are a rabid fan of the series it is based off of."

most underated fighter in guilty gears xx

"What made you think that Chipp is underrated?

IMHO he is one of the most played characters since he is so easy to be cheap with. Actually, Sol's probably one of the cheapest, non boss character. Though I like him alot, I think Arc Sys should make him a boss and just get it over with.

Characters that are more underrated, I think, would be Zato-1/Eddie, Johnny, and Axl.

When learned how to be played, Zato-1 can effectively own a match. When used correctly he can pin an opponent in a corner and just punish them.

Johnny is a bit of an odd one that requires a bit of skill to use effectively. His lack of a proper dash (he hops instead, like Felicia from Darkstalkers) makes him unusual to use.

Axl's also different since he's one of the only characters that uses charge moves. Many of his moves alow the player to keep an opponent right where he wants them on the screen.

Then there's Abba. Who I personally thinks stinks, but I don't know her too well as I gave up playing Isuka (I like playing my fighters one player sometimes, and that one is next to impossible to play alone). They fixed her in XX Slash, but I still really haven't tried her."
