This wallpaper captures the urban essence that proliferated the art of Ghost in the Shell in every incarnation of the series. Phill does an amazing job of capturing a moment of surrealism.

While there are a few, stray building angles and shadows, you find that your eye forgives the minor details and instead focuses on the overall scene that is larger than life, with lights trailing off into infinity.

At Last! a new miyazaki film!

3 years 11 months ago

"I believe the basic story is the main character is a young girl, and through an encounter with a wizard/sorcerer she is transformed into an old woman. I've heard that the same voice actress does both the young and old voice, so it should be impressive.

Then it follows through with a romance between the girl/sorcerer. I'm a bit foggy if he transformed her, or someone else did. Yes, it is a fairytale/childrens story but however childish it is, it will be good. Studio ghibli has some of the best music/animation/characters of any film studio I've seen."

"I don't think they'll screw it up, at least not badly. From what I've heard most of the staff are fans, so I feel they can do it justice.

I'm so anxious for it either way. I don't mind terribly when people screw up a movie rendition of a book, as long as they don't flip the meanings around... I had some issues with LOTR, but I still enjoyed it."

which anime character discribes your personality the most?

"Shigure (obvious?) from fruits basket.

On the surface silly, weird, and easygoing/somewhat lazy.

Under the surface highly intelligent, selfish, and gets work done (if it's important.)"

A 96Kb 3D FPS game? you're kidding...

4 years 5 days ago

"The game accomplishes it's small size by "Magical Maths." Essentially all the textures and maps/models in the game are equations. That's why it's resource hungry. Instead of reading a file to figure out what to draw, it has to perform a complex equation and GENERATE that on the fly.

Very cool use of technology though <!--emo&:)--><img src='style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif' /><!--endemo-->"

I'll probably get it on the xbox. I wish my pc could handle it, but I'm having trouble getting good FPS in city of heroes, it would probably just fall over and die if I tried to run D3"

"I've got a dreamcast, ps2, xbox, and gamecube.

And two pcs.

I play city of heroes on pc, and occasionally some warcraft/starcraft. Oh and Homeworld.

I play PS2 the most, and a lot of the titles I play are PS1 rpgs even. Gamecube second, I think it has some of the best games in the industry.. just so few. Never had a game for the xbox, just use it as a media player. All the games for xbox you can get on another console or the pc generally so why bother? <!--emo&:)--><img src='style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif' /><!--endemo-->"

Fahrenheit 9/11

4 years 3 weeks ago

"It's not as funny as bowling for columbine, but it is definitely a manipulation of the truth. That's not to say there aren't a lot of facts contained within, it's just that the presentation and other omissions are very misleading.

It has some funny parts, and is well put together... for what it is. That's the catcher though, as what it is is propaganda. It's far left propaganda. I'm all for freedom of press/speach and all but just the fact that you won't be shot for misleading people doesn't make it a good thing to do <!--emo&:)--><img src='style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif' /><!--endemo--> Not to say there's not plenty of far right propaganda as well.. <sigh>

There's some pretty tasteless stuff it there as well for shock value/playing on the emotions to distract from the facts of the argument, etc. My recomendation for anyone going to see it is to remember that it's an opinion/editorial piece. Take a huge grain of salt in with you, and then make sure to do your own research before you start preaching the Moore gospel. I'd hate to see more Moore-ons."

cosplay

"I've never actually done a skit, but I've gone to cons in costume several times. It's pretty fun, but then again, haloween was always my favourite holiday.

Most recently me and a few friends (one of which is on here... but she can choose to name herself or not...) went as students in the stuffed animal cafe from Azumanga Diaoh. Probably one of the most original cosplays I've seen.

"Yeah it's sad gamecube doesn't have more games for it because it's an awesome system.

However, the few games it does have rock. Some of the best I've ever played.

Eternal Darkness
Metroid Prime
Zelda: Wind Waker

to name a few are excellent. More to come.. but much like the 64, there's just a few handfuls of awesome to be had."

"<!--QuoteBegin--><div class='quotetop'>QUOTE</div><div class='quotemain'><!--QuoteEBegin-->Its not THAT new, I think it has been out in Japan for quite some time now.  It's exuberantly expensive, I think well over $2000, comes with a 24x speed DVD burner, it can record whatever you are playing on it (analog style I believe) in addition it can also play PS1 and PS2 games.

From what I've heard, when PS3 comes out, there will be two versions.  One will be just the PS3 console whereas the other will have the PSX integrated as well.<!--QuoteEnd--></div><!--QuoteEEnd-->Its $800. Sold like hotcakes in Japan, sony is making serious bank off of it. Basically it's an entire home entertainment system in a console. Hook it up to a tv/speakers and you're set. It'll record your favourite shows, burn them to dvd to watch later, play games, play normal dvds, do your homework, and remind you to wash the dishes...

well not quite, but it's a cool all-in-one application."

LOL... Metal slug 3 for XBox already reviewed.

"<!--QuoteBegin--><div class='quotetop'>QUOTE</div><div class='quotemain'><!--QuoteEBegin-->The N64 had a 64-bit RISC CPU right? Then why is the Xbox CPU 32-bit?<!--QuoteEnd--></div><!--QuoteEEnd-->You'd have to ask Microsoft on that one <!--emo&:)--><img src='style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif' /><!--endemo--> My guess is the pentium had plenty of power, and was easily/cheaply available. Xbox runs a pentium i 733 mhz. The graphics processor has 128 bit processing, and ram bus I believe.

N64 did indeed have a 64 bit RISC cpu (running at 93.75 mhz.) It was well ahead of its time, completely unequaled until the dreamcast came out. Gamecube is still 64 bit, but it runs at 485 mhz, nearly 5 times as fast. It's also got a load of specialty chips made to process the graphics.

Other than the fact that xbox has HD output support, the gamecube is it's equal graphically. Xbox 32 bit with 128 bit graphics, 733 mhz processor. Gamecube 64 bit with 128 bit graphics, 485 mhz.

Point being, bits aren't a deciding factor.

And I am WAY off topic!

Neo Geo Games Rock, metal slug especially... there that's better <!--emo&:)--><img src='style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif' /><!--endemo-->"

"<!--QuoteBegin--><div class='quotetop'>QUOTE</div><div class='quotemain'><!--QuoteEBegin-->It depends on what you're describing.

<a href='http://www.pcvsconsole.com/features/consoles/xbox.php' target='_blank'>http://www.pcvsconsole.com/features/consoles/xbox.php</a><!--QuoteEnd--></div><!--QuoteEEnd-->Yeah, some parts are 64, some are 128, but essentially it's a 32 bit cpu with 64 bit extensions. All the other consoles are like that as well. claiming high "bits" anymore is just marketing, it's hardly ever an indication of console performance/capability."

Good games, no recognition

4 years 1 month ago

"Primal (PS2)

A game from ENGLAND! wow! Weird huh? Great story, really good voice acting, cool game play and premise. The one bad bit was the controls were a bit wonky at times, and a few points it was really unclear where you could walk/climb and where you couldn't so you ended up trying everything.

But overall, very awesome game."

Japanese animation industry losing jobs

4 years 1 month ago

"This article is a little misleading. It's true that cell animators pay is horrible. But the thing is, cell animation is not very common at all anymore. Not true cell animation at least. Most animation/anime production companies have moved into more digital studios, using a lot of software to produce the shows. Studio Ghibli was a long holdout to use traditional methods only, but even they've caved. Miyazaki admitted that there were things they could do with computers that would take them months to do via cell.

Character designs are still done mostly by hand. Storyboarding often as well, even a lot of keyframes for some companies, but nearly all in-betweeners are done digitally.

So it's true. Hand drawn animation is dying, but Anime and Animation, is not at all <!--emo&:)--><img src='style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif' /><!--endemo-->"

Linux: Thread I

4 years 1 month ago

"I've been involved in the Linux community since 1994. I used to hang out with Rob Malda in #LinuxOS (and #Linux96, #Linux95, #Linux before that) on IRC long before slashdot was created. I'm definitely a supporter. It has a ton of good points, though I'm more towards supporting the core system (kernel/device driver development.) It's grown to be an awesome community with so many good points... and a lot of bad... Projects that start out great then die. Projects that could be great but are completely undocumented. Projects that ARE great but no business will accept them because no one supports them... etc.

I use linux on all my servers. I don't touch it for the desktop. I did some code for the early early gnome apps, and touched a bit of kde, but even the latest incarnations have a very long way to come to be a replacement to MS. It's very true that they have the potential, but when it comes down to it you get what you pay for. Yes there's thousands of free apps out there. Some good, some bad, some horrible. It's awesome for programmers and advanced users (I am a programmer.) Not so good for average computer users, or specialized computer users (Publishing, Video, Cad, etc.)

I rooting for linux still. but it's got a long way to go and MS is going to give it quite a battle. When a client needs an application, unless it's web based I go with MS for their solution. Why? Because otherwise the client is not going to be able to handle it. No matter how simple it is, the client will have more questions and potential problems if I try to help them with a Linux Solution. It will mean either a ton of support time on my side, or a lot more work for them. Both of those are completely unacceptable."
