This wallpaper captures the urban essence that proliferated the art of Ghost in the Shell in every incarnation of the series. Phill does an amazing job of capturing a moment of surrealism.

While there are a few, stray building angles and shadows, you find that your eye forgives the minor details and instead focuses on the overall scene that is larger than life, with lights trailing off into infinity.

I hate how things categorized as "indie rock" are almost always on major labels. Isn't that an oxymoron?

Isn't it silly? XD Although I think they do it for two reasons: 1. The band was indie for a long period of time or are known of as "indie." 2. Hipsters will still buy the albums XD

But I will admit, I would rather listen to new music/people I haven't heard of (with the exception of a lot of "eclectic" music that I listen to, such as Mamas and the Papas or the Beatles)"

Print making Manga

1 year 2 months ago

"Like Utena said, I don't think this is something you should do unless you wanted to make an interesting and experimental manga. But it's definitely not something that should be used all the time. I don't know about you, but I am very picky and precise with my inking, and I found it hard to be precise or predict where the ink was going to go with print-making, which is fine if that is the style you are going for, but I don't think it would work out very well for manga (unless you were doing it for a one-shot) because of how time-consuming it is. In the manga/comic industry, speed is crucial >___<"

Safari

"I am very surprised that nobody has mentioned Camino. It's just like Firefox (made with the same engine), but it's tailored for Macintosh use. I've never had any problems with it, and I love using it. I would totally recommend it =) especially since I dislike Safari. X)!"

yet another Death Note wall

"First off, thank you all for your help! I really appreciate the advice, and I've been doing my best to apply it. Here's what has been done (with a link to the new version below)--

the text:
I didn't like it either. XD Removed.

Light (foreground/left):
Originally, I had adjusted the image to those colors so that it would stand out/contrast against the background, but the complaints about the brightness/green-ness made me think other wise XD So I re-adjusted the colors so that it wasn't so bright and god-awful green.

As for the extraction/editing, to tell the honest truth, I didn't think anyone would notice the difference and I rushed it. Thank you for proving me wrong. XD It has been fixed. I also inked (outlined) the scan to bring it out a bit more.

That green thing floating off to the side of Light:
In the original scan ( click here to see), Light was holding a scythe, but Mikami was standing in front of it, so I edited out Mikami thinking that the disjointed look would be cool, but none of you recognized it as a scythe XD (well, one of you did, but that's neither here nor there) so I re-built/painted the scythe back in.

Added:
I added in more skulls. It should give more meaning to the image that just "ZOMG, Light," and I'm hoping that it gave it more depth.

And a sig. I didn't know about the sig rule before; I usually prefer walls without sigs, but since this is a rule here I will comply :D

Let me know what you think! Do the changes improve the wall? Have I reached a good point? Or do I have more work to do? XD Personally, I think it might need something else (like text or somesuch), although I'm not sure. But I don't want to over-do it :D

The wall looks great expect for the "Green" Raito.. so whats the big idea with it?

I dunno. I mean, I honestly can't say. I got rid of it. XD He looks normal now :D

a major problem with this wallpaper is that everything is detached from one another. there is the bg, which you didn't really make because it's a crop of a death note calender scan (plus some texture overlay of sorts). there is the foreground image, which isn't perfectly extracted...and i actually recognize that the others don't seem to: that "green floating thing" is the blade of his scythe. except somehow you extracted out the middle that connects the staff Light is holding to the blade. =/ you'll have to go back and redo the extraction as you want to keep things intact. and the last element would be the text.

Well, the texture overlay is actually more than it seems; I scanned the back of an old marble chessboard and did some work on it, so there was a tad bit more work than just artbook scan + texture. :D Since my first post, I have worked on the extraction; the reason why the scythe was cut in pieces was that there had been a character in front of it that I had cut out ( here is the original scan), but I rebuilt/painted it in the new version, so the scythe is back. :D And don't get me started on the text; I know, I know, it was awful. It's gone. XD

i don't see any interaction between bg, scan, and text. they are just there. everybody was telling that your wall is flat but it's not so much that as there isn't a strong sense of bonded connection between your elements. (why does this bg connect and reflect the foreground? how does the character fit into the bg and yet not "disappear" into it? is the text nicely visible yet not distracting? does the text summarize the idea behind the wall? asking yourself questions like these help.) sure the images are all from death note and the text is green, like your scan. but physically, nothing ties them together, thus giving that undesirable "cut and paste" feel. walling requires you to develop a sense of relation between everything, rather than just putting something there because "the paper needed something off to the left". everything must be in a wall for not only a compositional/balance reason, but also for a relevance/aesthetic reason.

The scan wasn't green :3 I made it green, for some reason. x___X but I fixed it back. XD

Anyway. Thank you for that amazing insight! :D I had never thought about that. I guess what I thought I was doing (for the theme) was "Light." What I had wanted to do with the paper was focus on him and his character, but that's not exactly a unifying theme or "relevance," as you might say. XD

I have tried to use your advice and focus on coordinating everything in the new version, but I'm not really sure that it brings everything together yet. What do you think?"

"
no depth, the colors are pretty much dead

I chose to go with a muted color palette and washed background because that is what I prefer :D I wanted to use it on my desktop, after all.

However, do you mean that the character doesn't stand out well against the background? That's something I could work on fixing.

the picture on the left looks glued on, shouldn't be there, the cutout needs to be improved too

Well, I think the paper needed something off to the left; I don't think a washed out background would be much fun to look at XD and the image on the right needed something to balance it out. But you don't think that the image on the left fits?

And how would you recommend I improve it? Were you talking about the editing around the edges, the quality of the scan, the color adjustments, having it there at all, all of the above, none? Please be more specific XD Vague suggestions don't really help much.

the text needs improving, that just comes down to your eye-for-design

Again, how do you recommend I improve it? ...I kind of don't like it myself. Would you recommend taking it out?

...in the future, when you give critiques, please do not just say "___ needs improving," "___ looks like foot," without explaining what you mean or giving some suggestions. XD It's kind of hard to apply your advice when it is vague or unspecific."

"Hallo! I'm new to walling (and to AP) and I'd like advice/critiques about my paper. Mostly, is it up to standard, or do I have a lot of work to do? :\ Where do I need improvement?

I've provided several sizes for your viewing pleasure XD err, well, yeah. :D (be patient with me, please KD )
