"Are there any other Saga Frontier fans here at AP? I love it! I think it's so much fun. I want to try to make a wallpaper for it, but I want to find some art of Suzaku first. My favorite character is probably Gen, but I like the heroes too - especially Astellus - IRPO, and the rebels. Next time I play as Red, I'm going to try to get all of IRPO and the rebels on my team.

Anyway, Saga Frontier is an RPG for the PSX. It was made in '98 and while the graphics haven't aged well and the story can be confusing at times, the gameplay and battle system are as good as ever.

You play as one of seven characters - Blue, Red, Emilia, Lute, Astellus, Riki, or T260 - with different stories set in the same world. Like I said before, the storyline is messed up. Apparently, Squaresoft published a book with most of the story. You heard right - a book! Fortunately, the information inside the book is readily available on GameFAQs.com and various Saga Frontier fan sites. However, there's enough in the game to care about and there are a lot of characters, so at least one will be appealing.

The character designs are gorgeous - Tomomi Kobayashi is awesome! - and the OST is pleasing. There are rarely any times I felt like putting on another song over the game's.

What really makes this game is the game play and battle system. You can have fifteen characters made into three parties of five. It's actually useful to have a lot of parties, since one heals while the other battles. And instead of leveling up like in most RPGs, characters' stats increase differently depending on their race. Humans' stats increase depending on their actions in battle - for example, a human who uses a lot of attacks will have his ATK increase, Mystics can absorb monsters and their stats will increase depending on how powerful the monster is, Monsters can absorb monsters and become more powerful monsters, and Mecs can equip items and have their stats increase depending on how good the item is. Also unlike most RPGs, characters learn moves differently depending on their race. Humans learn physical moves in the middle of battle, Mystics and Monsters get moves from the monsters they absorb, and Mecs get moves from enemy mecs they absorb. "

"Samurai Champloo was a really satisfying historical fiction anime.

I liked the historical references to Van Gogh and Chrisitianity and such and the stars are such appealing characters.

I loved the music too. Nujabes is awesome! I liked him, but I didn't know he did so much of this anime's OST. I liked the hip-hop references too.

The fight scenes were also great."

How is Japanese Anime better than America Cartoons?

"I too am biased, but I'm going to play devil's advocate here, since I also like animation from the USA.

While American animation tends to have a lower quality of what's being animated, the animation tends to be better. Compare the Fleischer brothers' Superman made in the 40's (?) to the recent Ghost in the Shell: Standalone Complex. I love them both, but while GitS is really detailed, there are scenes where nothing is animated at all - not even eyelids! (:O)

Also, the classics - like Loony Tunes and Disney movies - appeal to a large audience without alienating anyone. Children like them, because of the humor and animals, while adults like them for the war and pop culture references and deep themes. American animation tends to be more stylish too. You've got things like Spawn and other things like Flapjack and Chowder. They don't look all that similar at all. I'm not saying stylish anime doesn't exist, but you've got to admit, it's few and far between sadly.

When was the last time you saw comedy in a non-comedy anime series that wasn't bodily humor, potty humor, or involved perverts? This seems to be the only humor I see in anime, while in American animation, you get wordplay, awkward scenes chockful of humor, trifles being taken seriously, etc. that is just much funnier IMO.

American animators and crews also get paid more and everyone on the crew is usually skilled in the arts. That's all I can think of for now."

"Older games are harder, because technical capabilities meant they couldn't make long games, so to make the gaming experience last longer, they made them harder instead. There are still some hard games out there, though, like Saga Frontier and I Want to Be the Man.

I remember the old, hard games. Like Battletoads. My brother and cousins would try to beat it. I played it to, but I always got stuck on the later levels. The old Sonic games were hard for me too, but very fun."

"Pink-Sakura, I could not agree with you more! I also enjoy anime and cartoons, but there are some anime I watch just for fun, like Sayanora Zetsubo Sensei or Dai Mahou Touge, and cartoons I watch that are more serious, like Spawn or Avatar.

Luvu, I mean no offense, but each frame of animation in an anime, in general, tends to be lower quality, so that's why the animation isn't exactly top-notch. The quality of what's being animated, however, is normally better than that of most cartoons. I've seen frames where characters had extra fingers, so yeah. I love them, anyway, though!"

What's your biggest Pet Peeve when it comes to Wallpapers?

"I have a lot of pet peeves. Misspelled words, poor extraction, JPEG artifacts, and clutter are my biggest wallpaper pet peeves. Misspelled words make the wallpaper creator look sloppy and lazy. I mean, you can spend hours makings a gorgeous wall, but you can't spend a few seconds to make sure you spelled a word right? If I feel like going at a wallpaper with a red pen, then there's a problem. Poor extraction makes a wallpaper look messy and sloppy. It shouldn't be obvious that the images are all from different places. JPEG artifacts make a really gorgeous wallpaper look really dirty in all of the wrong ways. I've seen it get so bad that you can't even read any of the text on the wallpaper! Ew! I don't like clutter, because then I don't have anywhere to put my icons. A wallpaper should have form and function. If it just looks great and I can't put my icons anywhere, then I can't use it and all of that great-looking-ness is for naught!

I actually don't have any problems with low-res. I use 800x600. That is the largest res my computer can get. Low-res to me (Was is 640x400?) doesn't exist anymore! XD"

.hack//G.U. Redemption

"Is anyone else looking forward to .hack//G.U. Redemption?

I really like .hack, so I'm looking forward to it. I was able to get a lot of information about .hack//G.U. Redemption from the official .hack//G.U. community site, Altimit Corp and the official G.U. site, .hack//G.U.

Some videos of .hack//G.U. Redemption can be viewed on Youtube.com here. They all look really interesting and get me pumped up over .hack//G.U. Redemption, but the Crimson VS. video is my favorite! The cards look so cool and some of them look like they have older .hack characters on them. I wonder why...?

Here is an interview with CC Corp.'s Hiroshi Matsuyama. Mr. Matsuyama is so cool! He is one of my favorite people in the gaming business. He talks a lot about G.U. in this interview. Some of his answers are really vague, but others, like what characters' names mean, were things I was wondering myself.

Most Annoying Thing In A Game

"I have nothing against cutscenes, but if a game is going to have them, I want them to be so short that they're over when I finish making and eating a sandwich or I want them to engage me as a player like the cutscenes in Resident Evil 4 or Metal Gear Solid 3.

Long loading times and poor gameplay annoy me like no other. I remember the loading times in Final Fantasy Chronicles were so long, I could leave it for hours and finally, it would be done loading. If a game is going to have loading times, it should be in seconds or minutes, not hours! Poor gameplay is just unforgivable. It's one of the few things that can make never pick up a game again."

It isn't so much that game franchises need to die, it's that the companies need to put more thought into each and every single game they produce for that franchise and not release so many games. "I like Bleach. The characters are appealing and the character designs are so original. It has a nice OST too and while the story isn't the deepest ever, it does its job well and I like the plot twists. It also has good filler! Yay!"
