After months of work, chanelqueen17 has created a gorgeous scene of Alice and Oz from Pandora Hearts, using scans that didn't even feature both characters together. Even after spending so much time on matching the details of the characters to their new looks, chanelqueen17 didn't stop there and went all out on the background too! This wallpaper definitely needs to be seen!

"It seems stroking is the problem. It's better to outline the linework as a shape instead of just a path and using stroke. Vectoring them as shapes will give you varying line width. It make the characters look less boring. Even so... the lines look blocky and not anti-aliased. What is the program you use?"

"I'll just answer the points.1) The eyes look weird because he has no eye lashes. He's suppose to have black eyelashes. If you wanted to make white eyelashes you would need to lightly outline them with a gray or soft color.
2) Of course you'll need the original screenshot to finish him off as you've said. But I would like to point out that he is facing completely forward and his chin is lop-sided. It should be symmetrical.
If you can't wait for the screenshot, you can easily look in the scans section or look up images for reference to finish him off."

"I personally like the yellow version better. It's similar to the white of the background and blends a bit into it. It's also the same color as her bikini so it naturally works with the wall. The green sticks out since it's saturation is different from the other greens. It all comes down to personal preference really since this is a minor color detail. You should use which one you like better.
The soft background works. It draws the main focus on to the character. I'd prefer either one but the vibrant one more. The gradient you used on the pattern makes the bottom left corner ones look a bit muddy in the softer version.
The wallpaper looks good to go though."

"Well...I'll just start off with the fact that the character isn't done very well. You will need to redo her by either extracting the scan, vectoring the scan, or artistically rendering her. Right now she looks nothing like Yoko from TTGL except for the hair and clothes.
The background... I don't really like it. Generally a background that has a single filter applied to it is very bad practice. The easiest way to render mountains are by brushing them. Look up videos on how to brush with the program you use. Then use real mountains as reference/guidelines. "

"The extraction needs to be done again. The messy extraction is clearly indicated in missing parts of his hair and arm. The font does not blend into the wallpaper. Overall the wallpaper feels glowly and the text is a bit jagged.
You fix these things by extracting Cloud again... neatly. It will always be hard to do a perfect extraction with the hair since 3D model hair is usually fuzzy. The fuzziness is removed when you extract it. Possibly slightly smudge or blur the hair's edges to get rid of the hard edges.
The text can be easily fixed with low opacity glows and anti-alias filters enabled on them. It's quite distracting that they're all different colors. Either make them all black (is what I think looks best) or make them white with a low opacity black glow so you can read them. At the same time the shadow won't make the background look completely flat.
The wallpaper is also missing a signature."

"Hmm... yea. I like the second one better. It gives enough space to rest your eyes from looking at the character. I think the shadow and logo was making it feel too cramped. Since the character takes so much of the screen."

"Background looks much better.Still not digging the character having some simple filter done to him.
You shouldn't stop making wallpapers. It's very common to be very frustrated while making a wallpaper. Only thing you can do is keep playing with it until you've piled on hours of work. Even if the change is subtle, it will all add up in the end."

"The glaring problem is that Shinji has no shading. He looks completely flat compared to the background. There needs to be some sort of gradient or solid shading. The text on his face should be spread out more over his body or maybe make a snake trail from his chest to his forehead. The "text for skin tone" suggestion on your DA is a pretty cool idea.
Torn photograph would look better with a thinner border. Maybe at least 1/2 the originally size. Then add a gradient to the background of the photo because it looks flat.
I don't really like the background but I don't know what you can do to make it "better" without drastically changing it. The color change suggestion is a possibility. A slight old film effect might be cool for it."

"It looks better.I just noticed a "line" going down the scan that goes through the Gundam to the ground. I am not sure what it is because its appearance is very odd. It clearly separates light and dark in some places but in some places it does go through. It doesn't affect the scan much though if you don't notice it.
One thing I've noticed before but didn't bring up is that the character's lighting is off compared to the light source. The light source on him is coming from the top left slightly behind him. This conflicts with the rising sun which is lower right and far behind. I really can't think of any easy way to fix it even if you flipped him. The light is suppose to just highlight the borders of his body. You can choose to leave it alone but it won't make him blend into the wallpaper as much. There's also a thin white line going across the top of the scan under your text.
You still need your signature and work on the water a bit more.
The back light is a bit over exaggerated but it's a general idea on how it should look."

Simple Walls
1 week 4 days ago
"There's a different between simple walls that work and don't work.Simplistic walls that work achieve artistic harmony that is very pleasing to the eye. It can be beautifully painted or pieced well together. Sometimes these walls can carry meaning behind it to help propel its value.
Simplistic walls that don't work are of poor quality. Poor quality can refer to the visual state of the scan or renders used. Most of the times these walls are slapped together with little effort and mindfulness on how the wall comes together as a whole.
Now, looking at your wall I can see quality issues right away. The scan used appears jagged. It looks like it has been over-sharpened or layers of effects on the scan that make the lines appear jagged and pop out. The character can be fixed if you painted or vectored her.
The font used for "Evangelion 2.0" does not fit the background. It has an abstract and messy feeling to it which is suited for wallpapers that have brush work. The background has a clean pattern and these two things collide with each other because they do not blend or work with each other. I recommend changing the background or using another font for "Evangelion." The font used for "you can (not) advance" fits the wall better.
My main problem with this wall is that it lacks effort. I see an extracted scan, two lines of text, and a patterned background. It would be better if you brushed or vectored some design branching from behind the character. The background could be left blank or have a slight gradient. Hell, maybe a simpler pattern like very light squares or scan lines. The current one you have seems out of date because it reminds me of some Windows 95 background pattern. There are plenty examples of simple wallpapers in the animepaper gallery that you can learn from. "

"As said above, the contrast is too high.Currently I don't think the wallpaper has enough work done on it to be approved. Maybe texture the background with grunge brushes to make it look sandy/dirty. I don't know how that will turn out though. Just keep playing with the wallpaper."

"It's a good start. The character and foreground are rather "soft." So I think the water looks a bit too sharp or realistic because of all the ripples. It would look better if it was softer like the foreground's dirt.
The wallpaper overall doesn't really feel like dawn. It feels more so in the mid-afternoon. When I think of dawn, I imagine it being slightly dark with a light peeking over the horizon slowly enveloping the land. In here, there isn't really anything dark to contrast against the light. The land or mountains in the background should be a bit darker to help with that.
The character also has a black border around his head that should be removed. As it makes his head stand out more instead of blending with everything. I suggest removing the text. I am not a text person but maybe someone can suggest how to make it fit the wallpaper more.
A signature referring to your animepaper name is missing."

Sweet Treats

"The foreground and background don't really communicate with each other. The character is just floating there because of the drop shadow. The first thing I noticed is that your marshmallows are really jagged. Making a brush of a 3D marshmallow picture is really bad. Especially if you scale up the resolution. You're better off brushing the marshmallows from scratch and looking at references. Find out what makes a marshmallow, a marshmallow. Then it would look decent at least.
I don't know what to think of the background. It seems you're trying to make a bag with marshmallows leaking out. I have no idea on how you render a good looking bag since I have never done it. I do know that the lines you drew are really jagged. When you work on a wallpaper, you should at least work on it x2 its intended size. This will help deal with jagged edges although it may not stomp all of them out.
The character needs the edges cleaned up because there are still some white left. The scan quality is decent. What is that floating emblem on his shoulder? Did you add it or was it a part of the scan? It's doesn't really fit in."

"The wall is pretty flat in my perspective.Well duh! It's 2D~! Anyway, you don't really become immersed in the wallpaper. The 3D photo background without anything done to it is what kills it the most. The re-color makes it totally flat. I don't recommend using 3D photos unless you really touch them up to help them become more 2D which is a pretty advance skill.
I can tell you that getting a photo and slapping anime characters is poor practice. If you're getting into the graphics industry you're going to need to learn how to make your own backgrounds. Whether it is by vectoring or brushing. The characters are floating which is usually bad but not always. You need something to ground them since there's a straight edge.
The characters still have white edges and need to be re-extracted as mentioned. I recommend that you extract using the pen tool and masking out the unnecessary parts for a clean extraction. Then have a color as your default background behind the scan. This will help you find the white parts. After you find the extra white spots, you can move the pen path to hide it.
Is the scan used someone's fan art? I am having trouble identifying it. Fan art is a touchy issue which isn't black and white. If it is by a well-known artist then it is allowed to be uploaded under their name. Usually you can see their name under a category or if you request the category and it is approved.
To help you even further. I just sketched out real quick the process of making your own background. Whether you draw or extend, it's a good idea to layout out what you're going to do. Do it while considering composition to have a nice flow. I am going to tell you that it will be far more rewarding than taking short cuts. You wouldn't draw all these arrows but it is something you slap inside your head to consider.
http://i35.tinypic.com/2z8p6wg.jpg
You don't need to do something big for your first wall since it will be too much. Just start out with simple vectors and brushing. This is just something to think about. Slowly work towards a goal and you will improve a lot without knowing it."

Trigun Paper

"Well...The quality of the scan doesn't matter if you're going to filter it out like that. Filtering out the character like that defeats the purpose of a vector. I am not sure if you're confused with what a vector is.
A vector is a shape made of calculated paths. The advantage of a vector is that you will get crisp lines and you will be able to scale the shape bigger or smaller without losing any quality. When you over-filter like that it just becomes another regular image.
Overall the wallpaper is lacking quality. The background is blurry and artifacted (blocky). Which looks like the result of blowing up an image beyond its original size or a bad scan.
Composition-wise it works out. I would move "Trigun" a bit more toward the top right corner to even out the negative space around it.
I suggest keeping the character scan in its original state and use layer effects or a filter to blend him into the paper. Then you will need to re-scan a crumpled piece of paper or learn how to render a crumpled piece of paper. Unless I am blind I see the lack of a signature (your animepaper name)."

Hey there

"It looks good so far.You can not assume people have a lot of icons on their desktop to make up for the white space. I am all for wallpapers that are not busy but the white space really stands out. A wallpaper is scene as a work of art. Even if you add icons along the left side, the white will contrast with the color of the icons distracting the viewer from the character.
Maybe you could extend your design pattern a bit more to the left or add a light background pattern."

"I uninstalled GIMP so I can not confirm whether or not GIMP can vector. There are other programs you can search for that are capable of vectoring such as Inkscape, which is free.
As for good quality screenshots, I do not recommend extracting a screenshot from a source and then using it. Screenshots are usually not sharp. It will be blocky or blurred to some degree. There are sharp 720p and 1080p videos out there but the moment you scale the character bigger, you will begin lose quality. Tokyo Underground is a pretty old anime so I am not if there are well seeded DVD sources out there.
You are better off finding high quality Tokyo Underground scans and extracting them."

"If you want it hard...What's wrong:
- The image quality is bad overall and I see no "cleaning" done
- No relationship between foreground and background
- The bottom right silhouette is distracting, especially since it is outlined
- Poor extraction of characters (from screenshots?)
- Lots of smudging (tried to hide jagged edges?)
- Characters look over-filtered
- Signature isn't complete
What you can do:
Find out what the "pen tool" is. It is one of the greatest tool for anyone into digital editing. You can use to vector images to increase their quality substantially. It can also be used to create masks around images to extract them cleanly without jagged edges compare to the wand tool. I suggest you look them both up since there are several tutorials online available.
Wall composition-wise, I suggest removing the bottom right silhouette. It has no place on the wall. I don't understand what you are trying to do with the wall. To me, I just see 2 screenshots extracted and slapped together. Is the character thinking of someone he couldn't save before drawing out his sword? It's been years since I've watched Tokyo Underground so I have 0 clue about the story atm. Even without a story, I don't think this arrangement will work.
Regarding the signature. You would put your animepaper name. Then you can include your other alias on other sites. The mods only have your animepaper name to compare to so make the job easier for them. They don't know if those other aliases on other sites are actually yours."

What do you think? Gallery worthy?
3 months 3 weeks ago
"I think it's far too simplified.Simple wallpapers do get accepted into the gallery because they have artistic value. Artistic value in how it was brushed or composed. This is just a simple vector with no shading. Maybe you can put up a light source from maybe the bottom or top and then render the character with shading. The background could be left black for contrast if you want."

"So...Is everything on the wallpaper blown up images? I need to see the original scan.
I can tell you though... the top character is blurry. Then the character in the background is unacceptable quality. He has been blown up to be blurry and has a lot of artifacts. There's also no real design to this wallpaper. To me it looks like a bunch of pictures collaged on to a wall. The white background is too plain."
