After months of work, chanelqueen17 has created a gorgeous scene of Alice and Oz from Pandora Hearts, using scans that didn't even feature both characters together. Even after spending so much time on matching the details of the characters to their new looks, chanelqueen17 didn't stop there and went all out on the background too! This wallpaper definitely needs to be seen!

MS Office vs OpenOffice.org
5 months 1 week ago
"AssasinXXX: What he forgot was that OP talked about OOo on Windows. The real reason people don't switch is that they can just install MS Office for free and not learn anything new. OOo is simple, but any change is a pain for most people.
My mother has been working with OOo for years, last 2 or so on Linux (Ubuntu). She doesn't know anything technical whatsoever and it was straightforward enough to fix the problems of Windows and to just work."

Linux / BSD / GNU topic

"I consider myself a noob in the Linux world, so I'm only using Ubuntu. I first put it in VMware and then actually installed it on an older computer where my mother works on. It used to have a rotten install of WinXP Home OEM. I have managed to run all the work-crucial apps in 5 hours, which is probably less than a full reinstall of Windows with everything. This Linux has wonderful Vista-like eye candies and the said Windows apps run in Wine sufficiently. Not perfectly, but if you know what to fix, it very well pays off with the Linux' durability. When you set it up, it will just keep working the same, no rot as in Windows. As was mentioned earlier, Hardy has issues upon upgrade. So I recommend to backup your home directory and do a clean install. I wouldn't, however, wait with the upgrade because Hardy is a LTS version, meaning it will receive much more attention with fixes than most others.
Tip: For generic serious applications, such as databases and dictionaries, use Wine. For 3D games, buy Cedega. It's cheaper than Windows and allows you to keep your free Linux without using emulated Windows in it.
Linux keeps improving fast, what is buggy now will probably work fine a year later. And they do fix bugs. Unlike MS which only fixes "political" issues and keeps the actual function bugs in place."

Clock Speed Vs FSB
1 year 1 month ago
"The performance of the recent Intel processors is an only concern for those with unlimited money supply. Those savvy will find out that AMD just pays off in the long run. If you, say, would spend a constant sum of money yearly for a computer, running on AMD would give you better value. Plus the quad-core thing is a gimmick, most applications can barely use one or two cores. Games can indeed use four, but their bottleneck is the graphics card, so you'd better save on the CPU and buy some Radeon 4870. Sorry for off-topic, now for the FSB.It is easy to overclock. The most important component for a successful overclock is the mainboard. Read up on the forums what model is the best for the CPU intended. It increases performance of mostly everything at once, so a balanced system is crucial for obvious economical reasons. The drawback is in the fact that data communicated between the components will become corrupted more often forcing their resend and finally crashing the system when a transparent recovery is impossible. This may, in fact, lower the performance if you overclock too much. Remember to run some benchmark to make sure your new setting actually helps a thing."

FLAC vs mp3 (at 320Kbps)
1 year 1 month ago
"MP3 is popular due to it's unique format properties: Still plays after any kind of corruption (an idea shared with MPEG movies), this is crucial for floppies and unreliable p2p programs. Most other formats of songs would be either unplayable or have the whole after the corruption point distorted. Secondly it is easily decoded on any CPU architecture, allowing the player manufacturers to use low-power ARM processors. The format is designed for sequential reading which helps performance on flash memories. The lossy part of the compression actually really discards the least needed parts. Other formats produce more noticeable difference with the same bitrate. Even Microsoft lies with its WMA which is advertedly twice as good as MP3. Lies! WMA discards all above 12 kHz, which is a very audible difference. MP3 discards only all above 17 kHz and yet it's configurable to be even higher.
The most important aspect of the lossy file format is that it's a FINAL format. You may not reopen it and save and expect the quality to be kept. Same as with a JPEG file - it's only good as the final result of your work."

Torrent help pls!
1 year 1 month ago
"I have tried a number of Torrent clients. I have to stick with Azureus. It has the best advanced functions for torrents with hundreds of files inside that other clients won't handle. It however requires Java and the new versions have annoying Vuze ads that have to be turned off separately. The second is uTorrent, it doesn't require installation and is lightweight, however doesn't offer as detailed features needed with those jam-packed torrents. It will be the best for most users of Windows.
On Linux, I liked KTorrent. (Runs in Gnome too, but starts longer.) Appears to have all I want. It uses a lot of ports though, so if you have trouble with router/firewall, just use Azureus for Linux. The packaging systems on Linux make the installation a breeze."

My first wall

"Here is what I would do:• Diverge from the all-orange scheme a bit. A cloudy layer with Hue overlay mode could do the trick.
• Remove the white strike. It's awful.
• Add a reason why the character to the right is so large. I know that you mean her to be "near" and it probably lacks the legs anyway, but try to underscore the proximity with some lighting, anything.
• The default Mincho font is indeed cheap. I've also used a serif kanji font once, but at least I used Kochi Mincho, which is a bit more fancy variant available for free. Here I suggest, if you have access to a scanner or a camera, to draw the "ikkitousen" kanji by hand and then transfer it into the computer. It should have more success if some IRL effort is put in.
• Add some shadows under the sitting girls.
•Fix the pixels on the ochre "arc".
And as a side double-note, Otaku in your avatar is commonly written in katakana and it is an insult to be called as such."

Capitalism

"I don't know how this phrase goes in English, but "the winners write the history". Capitalism is considered the least faulty, because the British and consequently the U.S. fought successfully around the world.I do agree that capitalism is quite close to the jungle's workings, but it also seems so because we are taught to think so from the start. Working for the good of the whole population is common in nature too and we are yet to find an establishment that would include both the good aspects of each "wing".
I usually say that I prefer communism to create the striving for performance in capitalists. Ironic, isn't it?"

Major Comp Slowdown

"Seeing that much has been already said, I'll add some unconventional recommendations.Download NTFILMON (FileMonitor) from sysinternals.com and see what accesses the files most often.
Run MSCONFIG and try to disable some start-up programs not from Microsoft. In fact, disabling any such programs won't cause unbootable computer, so just try it.
Download SpeedFan, go to it's SMART tab and check the "Fitness" parameter of your disk. If it appears to fail, replace it.
Remember if you played a StarForce-equipped game (likely), download SFDRVREM (google) and use it.
And last but not least, remember what you installed just before it started to do that and uninstall it."

iexplore.exe ATTACKS
2 years 3 months ago
"I suggest that the OP installs FAR to see the parent process of the IEXPLORE ones and also to see their full path. It is common for malware to use common system filenames while running from elsewhere. Then, if iexplore is NOT in c:\program files\internet explorer, kill them and then delete the malicious iexplore.exe.As a side note, I also use Windows Server 2003 as a workstation and I'm happy with it. I can play 3D games with no problems. I use themes etc. The main reason why I tried it is to experiment with web services."

Windows Install Problem

"The SCSI setup is indeed tricky, I suggest that you read all the manuals and labels again for your controller and disk.Since your disk is already formatted in another computer, simply select to keep the filesystem without changes and it should work.
I also can't see a reason for using SCSI today when SATA has completely taken over.
P.S.: Ribbon cables are likely to break inside. You should change yours to see if it helps."

Firefox Bug
2 years 6 months ago
"I've never had the same problem, but you can invoke Start Menu / Mozilla Firefox / ...Safe Mode. This will let you find out if it's some plug-in.If you want a new install, you MUST manually delete c:\program files\mozilla firefox AND c:\documents and settings\<YOUR NAME>\application data\mozilla. (Warning: This method is aggressive, you will lose all FF settings.)
As for the memory requirements, ff uses about 30 MB RAM more than IE, perhaps because FF carries it's own implementation of everything while IE uses the OS libraries already shared in memory used by the OS.
But once FF is loaded, this makes no difference in the speed of the browsing. The loading times will, of course, differ from browser to browser, but all are reasonably fast today and you should choose according to the security and features more."

Prob with computer

"I had to upgrade from 512 MB RAM to 1 GB just because of Photoshop 6 back then. Trust me, it needs a LOT of RAM.The Windows defragmenter is not too good and it may not recover ANY free space, plus it won't really optimize all the files it could. I suggest that you keep your hard drive somewhat empty (no more than 80% taken). The paging file won't be defragmented anyway, so unless you use a good third-party program (Raxco PerfectDisk), the defragmenter won't do any of it's claimed goals properly.
If you are unsure about spyware, run Spybot and Spyware Terminator (both free), you may also try AdAware. This makes sense.
Please also use SFDRVREM to remove STARFORCE which is not detected otherwise and also makes the system slow and unstable."

Why does everyone like Firefox?

Do you guys think graphics will become perfected?
3 years 6 months ago
"The graphics in the games don't improve; they get even worse sometimes. Take Max Payne. That game wasn't demanding, yet with antialiasing, it looks better than GTA SA. Or Mafia. Mafia was demanding at that time, but runs well now and again - better than GTA. Or True Crime (the second part) - terrible. I don't give a damn about graphics, I just want it to be enjoyable."View
