I mean, one of the most beautiful things in my closet is a skirt that I sewed from scraps of cloth for less than $30 dollars, yet when wearing it downtown when I do decide to shop in the more pricey areas, it's been estimated at a $600 skirt! Go figure, huh? But I wouldn't sell it for the world because it's mine. It's part of my style, and I wouldn't want to sell that to anyone else.

Which is why style transcends fashion. And which is why I cannot concur with people who equate one to the other indiscriminately.
One can be fashionable and yet not be stylish.

"Exactly.
You don't need to be a la mode to be stylish.
I wish people who follow fashion trends blindly can eventually attest to this..." View

"People often praise others for having 'great style', 'good taste' or being 'fashionable'.
But does wearing what are so-called, 'IN' clothes, enough to label someone as stylish?
I think this is an issue of individuality.
And that style overrides fashion anytime.
A person with a fantasic sense of design and style can look fabulous even if he/she isn't decked in this season's 'Must-Haves', so to speak.
Afterall, fashion is all about looking good.
Therefore, a stylish person holds her own - regardless of the deciduous trends witnessed in fashion.
Besides, a person all clothed in the latest designer threads need not think about his/her outfit. They know they can't go wrong with the latest fashions.
And what does this show?
There is no creative input here! This is what we familiarly coin as 'following fashion blindly'. Such a person need not have a good sense of style, it suffices to dress as 'Vogue' says.
One can be fashionable, to always look right in the trendiest ensembles. However, we would then be missing out on what we value so much - creativity.
Compared to the person who dresses to her own liking, one who has creative inputs on her image, one who looks put-together with her dressing individuality, the 'blindly fashionable' person doesn't appear so amazing afterall.
Hence, style over fashion.
Fashion is all about style but style does not entail fashion.
Style does not need fashion as an avenue for showcase ;)
