ok... here's the final version. i added a red stroke/gradient around the bottle so it looks like the light is bending around it and messed with the liquid in it so that (i hope) it doesn't look like it's falling. thanks for all the help. i'm submitting it now. wish me luck."

"It's a good idea. but first off, it's the wrong size. AP wants these resolutions:

- 1024*768
- 1152*864
- 1280*960
- 1280*1024
- 1600*1200

Wide screen:

WXGA - 1440x900
WSXGA+ - 1680x1050
WUXGA - 1920x1200
WQXGA - 2560x1600

check out the FAQ for some other pointers.


like shady said, it is pretty simple... a screenshot with a logo in the corner. i never played Final Fantasy VII or saw the new movie, but is there something else that you could add to the wall to make it more interesting? it's final fantasy, so i'm sure there was a ridiculously huge sword and some weird animals somewhere in it. would they make good additions to the wall?"

"If you starred too long at your first version, i can understand why you had a headache... wow, that was bright. (just kidding... couldn't resist.)

but you've come a long way. everytime you post an update it's 100 times better. you must have spent a lot of time cleaning this one... much improved. though it looks like you lost part of the right hand and shoulder and some depth in the eyes. vectoring is an option if you want to invest more time in the wall. your two subjects would be a lot more clear so then you could do some extra stuff in the background and not worry about it overpowering them. here's a link to a good vectoring guide - then you'll need a program like illustrator. it's a good start. keep it up.

"I'm the same way. i like to vector with illustrator, but photoshop has so many bells and whistles it's hard to understand it all.

it looks like you have the idea with the grass. just make sure you start at the back and work forward. in the upper right and in the middle you have a couple of chunks where the bottom of the blade is showing. also, it looks like you have three layers... to add depth, you could shrink the brush size for the grass as you go back and slightly darken it. makes a cool effect. any idea what you'll put behind them? sky, rolling hill/tree, mechanic shop...

their foot placement looks fine. the show was great... still listening to the soundtrack... can't wait to see your finished wall. good luck."

"The arrangement is cool and i really like simple walls, but there are a few things that make it look "not quite right". first, like panda said, the renders are a little fuzzy... and different degrees of fuzzy. you got away with no shadows for everyone but the guy in the back. since it's not dark where his feet touch the ground, it looks like he's floating (imho). something that you couldn't change without vectoring is that it seems the light is coming in at a different direction for a couple of the characters. some have overhead lighting and some have lighting from the left.

anyway, i like how you set it up. the telephone poles going with the characters' heads is a cool way to draw your eye to the guy in the back. nice work. and sorry if i rambled... i'm tired."

"I like it. the mountains are much improved... the sharingan takes up the empty space on the right... your shadowing on the bigger sasuke is much better. if you don't want to vector, this is probably a place to stop and try submitting it. good luck man.

...and if it doesn't get accepted, post again and tell us what they didn't like. my first wall was horrible until i posted it on this forum and got ripped apart. it's a good way to learn."

blu3angl... when you say highlight, do you mean like a spotlight on the ceiling or shadow/highlight in photoshop? either way, i changed spike's color to be a little more red and used the shadow/highlight function to make him more of a silouette since, like you said, the only light source is behind him. thanks for that idea.

-there's a whiskey bottle on the piano now, it was vectored from a stock photo from deviant art.
-a few of you have mentioned that the reflection on the piano is too much, but this seems like a club that takes care of the equiptment... it's just a really clean and shiny piano.
-i tried adding a table on the right to make the bar more lived in, but it seemed out of place, so i didn't vector it. do you think the bottle and the pictures are enough?

-anything else? i'll probably submit it tomorrow morning if no one else posts any complaints over night. again, thank you all for the advice. i make so many mistakes... it's nice to have someone else's point of view."

"Your new version looks much better. nice work. i can't help you with cleaning a scan... i vector everything. it's really easy if you want to do it, it just takes time. the scan isn't bad. maybe if you added some texture to the background it would help the scan blend better.

also, since this is the same wall you were working on earlier today, you can post updates in the original thread and not start a new one. it's easier to see what you've changed and what other people have commented on."

"Some textures would be nice for the background. and your tag at the bottom in normal text is a little distracting (not that that matters... just thought i'd mention it). also, the two different colored eyes look good, but they're so different that it's a little distracting (imho). could you take out some of the color and leave the normal white and black eye with just a little of the differently colored irises on each side? just a thought.

"I agree... if you're going to put something on the wings, it has to stand apart from the background. a slight fill color inside the wings might look good... or a texture. also, there are a couple of places where the hair crosses the shoulders/neck/fingers and you can still see both the hair lines and the shoulder lines. i guess that may be the style... if so, good job. really intersting idea - great start."

"I like the clipping with the pink across the ceiling, but not when you clip off the dog. could you leave the dog and lose the ceiling? also, the shadow of the chair going down past the chair's legs makes it look like the chair is floating.

i agree that the vector lines are too thick - they don't match the skinny music notes above. fix that and it'd look great. good job. keep it up."

"Yeah... nat just posted the scan. o well. i've already sent her a message, so maybe i'll get to know someone new.



anyway, third update:
-a little red in spike's eyes. too much made him look like the devil, so i blurred it and made it 40% opaque.
-no extra text at the bottom.
-softer neon sign
-reflection on piano
-a little more red on frank
-i tried some filters on the ceiling to make the lines less obvious, but didn't like them too much. so it's the same.

"I live in a 130 year-old house with wooden ceilings that look just like the one in the picture, so that is why the ceiling has the black lines between the wooden planks. and i didn't know i had to ask permission before i vectored someone's scan... oops... i just sent nat a message. hope i'm not in trouble.

thanks for they eye comment. red would look great in his eyes with the red sign (i forgot they were red). as far as the ash tray/glass... i like the idea, but when i cropped the image i had to push a lot of things in from the sides, so is it too crowded now for something else? "

thanks for commenting. i re-did the wall with the pictures and got the bricks to line up. i hope that fixed the picture problem. you're right about the lighting dara... spike has a little more red on him now, but do you think it's enough? and his eyes do look unfocused... thats why i liked the original scan... it's like he's lost between his thoughts and the music. it looks chilled out.

and what about the text? good/bad?
