This wallpaper captures the urban essence that proliferated the art of Ghost in the Shell in every incarnation of the series. Phill does an amazing job of capturing a moment of surrealism.
While there are a few, stray building angles and shadows, you find that your eye forgives the minor details and instead focuses on the overall scene that is larger than life, with lights trailing off into infinity.

"What she means is, instead of applying the texture directly as-is, also distort it using perspective tool or free transform, so that the texture bitmap itself follows the vanishing point - ie instead of a rectangular shape, it should be like one of those trapezoids of vertical lines + vanishing point lines.
You can see the difference of applying a texture directly compared to applied with perspective here."

"Progress is looking really good! ^^Hoihoi-san proportion and perspective alright, but too bright - even with the light flooding in from the window, that is dim light and it's behind her, so she should be darker in color. Play with the saturation/lightness + brightness/contrast some more.
Comments on the window area: do notice the purple block, looks like a curtain - so needs to have some folds in it, and less rigidly rectangular. Possible missing horizontal beam in window pane. Diagram. For the outside background, I suggest breaking it down to just 3 parts - sky (blue gradient), tops-of-trees (near) and trees (far) - trees are flat green with some top-outlining in lighter color since the moonlight shines from above. Rough eg.
Boxes and books - sorry, I still haven't made you that diagram. here it is - see, any boxes or books simply follow the same perspective rules that were applied to the room and the furniture. Lines are vertical, horizontal, or follow the vanishing point. Some flexibility required for stuff that isn't perfectly cuboid, but otherwise straightforward and not very different from what you'd already done earlier.
As for the shadow, if you don't want just a blob then what Chibicrystal has described is probably the easiest way - duplicate the shape, distort accordingly, then blur. But if this isn't done correctly, it'll look really wrong - bad example. >_< This method should work well for the Hoihoi-san vector, but for the guy on the futon, it's probably best to vector the shadow separately roughly following the shape, since the shadow is cast practically right under it."

Two really dumb newbie questions
1 year 10 months ago
"The present search function only searches within that particular board. While it might be useful to have a search button for the whole forums on the main forum index like you suggest, but considering we're talking about hundreds of thousands of posts in the whole forum, such a function may take too much processing time on the server. I guess with this suggestion will have to be left to Bantam to decide."View
Some questions about uploading scans
1 year 11 months ago
"It's preferred that you upload scans that you actually scanned yourself. With scans obtained from p2p, you can't be sure if they're originally from some other site. In the scans guide there is a list of other sites - you should not post scans that came from those.
More details on scan size, quality and other requirements - please read scans guide. Be safe not sorry - you get fined papers for rejected scans!
There are some background-only scans (with no characters) here so I guess that means yes.
Yes. Just make a note of the existing scan and mention that yours is bigger."

Grading
1 year 11 months ago
"If you mean the wallpapers that appear at the top of the front page (one large + 4 thumbs) that is the "Showcase" section - those are, obviously, good wallpapers. Yes, their rating is A or above, but not all A grade wallpapers are shown, either. The selection criteria is probably based on some ninja fairies, as far as I know.
You can see the list of all showcase walls by clicking stats>showcase.
The link is here."

"There are two different limits - the 15/day limit, and the leecher limit. Details here. The two limits are different and independent of each other.Seeing as you've made no wallpaper comments or forum posts (except this one) you've obviously hit this leecher limit. Take some time to participate. But don't spam!"

"Time for a bit of geometry. Take a look at conic sections, particularly the hyperbola. Skip the math, you just need to know that a hyperbola is the curve made by intersecting a cone with a plane in that manner. Now for the tricky 3-d spatial imagination part - pretend that the light shining in the window is a cone coming right at us. Can you see that the cone of light + the side wall (or front of drawers) will form a hyperbolic curve? In fact, when you start shading the floor and ceiling, you'll want to keep this in mind, too.
Based on that let's look at diagram 1 - the blue & green comments, please. Should be hyperbolic - see diagram 3 for some hyperbolas roughly drawn in . If you go back and compare my older diagram you'll find the left drawer was wrong. >_< And I hope you see what I mean by the gradient on the right drawer being circular.
Addressing the red + orange comments in diagram 1 now, check out diagram 2 which I hope is self explanatory. I guess this bit caused you to trace the shading on the doors a bit too exaggerated.
As for yellow comments in diagram 1, yup they do look strange - in such cases don't even trust the screencap at all. Use the logic 'it's harder for ambient light rays to get into corners' and get shadow contours looking like diagram 4. (Yup, a quick look at contours on side walls too.)
Of course, it's all super-bright for easy visibility. You're doing nicely with the gloomy look while keeping with the more cartoony style. The wall shading style as clear-cut lit and shadow areas is good, just need to get the contours right.
Good going!"

"Good point. Listen to le blu3; and watch out you don't get too engrossed shading it smoothly since that might cause a style mismatch compared to the Hoihoi-san character vector. =D"

[News] Neon Genesis Evangelion's REMAKE
1 year 11 months ago
"This is some serious omgwtfbbq going down. I agree that this may be just an excuse to squeeze some more money out of this franchise, but it remains to be seen just how good or bad it is. How similar or different would the story be from the original? We can only guess.Evangelion was among one of the first anime I'd ever watched and it still has pretty good standing in my personal anime rankings. I would catch this remake to see what they're up to with it, but my hopes aren't very high - it probably won't have the sort of great impact on the anime scene that the original had. indeed I'm more worried that it will turn out to be sub-par.
Wait and see, I guess.
Actually, 4 movie-length segments sounds about right since that comes to about 10-11 hours in length, and 26 eps x 25 mins = 10.5 hours.

"Agreed with ongaku. Outlines really depends on the style you're aiming for. Super-thin outlines on my GitS wall is for added dimension of realism and works well in that context. But if you look at the Hoihoi-san vector that will go with this background, a more cartoonish style is apt in this case.I apologise for the delay on the diagrams - it's been an awfully busy couple of days. >_<"

Fund Raising...

"Do you absolutely have to keep it within campus? If not, try busking, if you've got the people who can perform. It works pretty well - especially if you put up a sign briefly explaining what you're raising money for. Busy places are good. Even better if there are lots of people who may be parents - they have kids too, and tend to be more generous. ;b Back when I was in the school harmonica band we pulled it off several times - to raise money to run our public concert, as well as for charity (notably after the 2004 tsunami)."View

"It sounds to me like you need to take some time off from this wall. You can always put it aside, take a break, work on other projects and then come back to it days/weeks later. Helps ease the frustration a bit if you take your time and spread the work out.The books and boxes (and other clutter in the room) can be tackled, if you feel up to it. Perhaps other scenes in the anime offer a better look at exactly what all the clutter is. Based on that, plus drawing in appropriate perspective guides, will enable you to vector them without having to guess so hard squinting at this lousy screencap. Especially since books and boxes are essentially cuboid, so it's easy to vector them accordingly to fit the perspective. You can always reduce the number of boxes and stuff, too, to make things easier. Let me know if you want to give it a shot.
As for the shadows and highlights, they can be done vectored, but if you're more comfortable doing it in photoshop, then do it. Keep different objects - window, wall, ceiling, floor, each drawer/shelf - on a separate layer. This will facilitate moving stuff in front/behind when you add other objects into the scene, and you can work on the lighting for each object separately.
To see the lighting better, I've upped the contrast on the screencap and increased the brightness even more: here. Using this allows you to see the 'countours' of the lighting gradient better, hopefully: here
I still think you need to take a break from this project, though. What's the point if you're not enjoying doing it?"

" wood textures - try the 'usual' places - mayang, imageafter are some places you can start looking.cardboard box and book brushes - not sure something like that exists, and not sure if you'll be able to find something that fits the perspective of the scene correctly. Sorry, not much help there."
