"I'd get THE GIMP... actually, I did get it. XD

It's a totally free version open source imaging program, which works in a lot of ways like photoshop. I think I like it for vectoring better than photoshop, if for no other reason than it's easier to control single lines with it.

I'm amazed you did this with mspaint. Paint was just a "geewhiz" thing they put in back when the first released windows. I don't think it was ever good for anything other than doodling.

My First Wallpaper, what do you think?

"For your first wallpaper, it's fine, but you need to work on some things.

First of all, if you're going to have that many scans in the wall, you need to group them like it's a group shot. Right now they are too far apart from each other.

The second thing is, the scans aren't very good. That's probably not your fault. If you can rescan them at a higher resolution (at least 300 DPI) then that's what you should do. If they are taken from a low resolution source, then your only option is to vector them. If you don't have a program that can do "the gimp" is good for vectoring. It works very similar to photoshop and in some ways for vectoring it's actually easier to control.

"The feathers you added are a bit on the jagged side. So also is the line of cloth strip the runs from the scan to the right side of the screen. That's really jagged. Revector those and you I think you're good to go there. Also, the font looks funny, not because the font itself is funny but because the color inside the loops of the letters isn't the same shade of grey as the background. Fix the color there and think the font will work.

Since the background is bland, but you want the point to be the scan and the lyrics, take bits of the words and randomly scatter them in the background but blended so that they are fuzzy and dark. Sort of like visual echos.

only advice is you may wanna actually vector those flower petals. but don't have an outline to it.

I was thinking the same thing. The reason I should is because right now they sort of look too real, which I knew all along. One thing someone in the chatroom pointed out to me was that the main scan now looks a bit jagged... I found out why. On a whim I adjusted the contrast of that layer to see what would happen and it introduced some jaggedness to the vector. That's fine because it gives me reason to replace it with the actual finished and fully retouched vector I keep forgetting to put in.

If this one works out I'd also like to upload the main vector to the scan gallery. Love to see what some of you guys could do with it. :D"

I actually like the first one best =)... i think the first one actually fits with the bg.
your latest one... not too sure what to say then the bg not going well with the char, maby the char on the left should be taken out? maybe a different bg like a field with a path she's running down? something like that may fit better?

I considered (and may yet do) a path or roadway in the background, but I think what I'm looking for right now is a color scheme. In the first one (the one with the orange gradient) the reason that works is orange is a complimentary color of blue. I'd like to keep the orange and the other hot colors in there... Oh well, let's see what happens."

"It's looking pretty good, but ~asa is right. The edges of the "sparklies" are too straight. A quick way to fix that would be to first duplicate that layer, the randomly erase a bits of both layers. Play around with it a bit and you should wind up with a good messy/random sparkly... I don't know what you call it, call it tinkerbell trail. :P"

"It's not just in the new submissions area. It's generally hard to get comments no matter what you do. If it's any consolation, I think your wall is very good =) I just wish it was in a widescreen version. That's the reason I started walling in the first place, a lack of walls that fit my screen.

I think the problem is this: there needs to be more new blood on this forum. Probably the people who have been around a while are not online as much, or getting tired of walling, or whatever... with new people the enthusiasm will return.

"Try using a diffuse filter on your background, but not across the entire thing. Only selected parts of it. Any place where the detail is high contrast.

Second, move the feather over just under the logo. That way it looks like it's part of that section of the wall.

Next, try making the globe transparent, like a crystal ball. Then use 3d transform on Sakura and Shyaoran to make it seem like it's a reflection on the globe. Blend as you go.

I added a vector of Athena, Shuko's Angel and changed my mind from feathers to cherry blossom petals. My original idea for the athena element was to have a transparency of Shuko over top of it, but I'll have to research some more to find a scan or screen cap that I can match to it. The other option is I could just go ahead and do my own, but I'm not sure if that's against the rules or not.
