If you haven't seen Seriel Experiments Lain, I highly recommend it. It's only 13 Episodes long, but really has some cool philisophical problems that it tackles. It's also one of the most difficult series to try and make a wallpaper from because it's hard to get the point across in just one frame."

"The font... Try Japanette at this link...... If I didn't already know it says "nanaki" I wouldn't be able to read it.

Nice clean scan, just needs a bit of use of complimentary colors to lend some balance in background against the scan (blues/oranges, reds/greens. purples/yellows)... since nanaki is a pure red color the background could have muted greens and magenta along with the orange hue. That would be nice."

"Yeah, there is significance to the Poles and wires.

The central theme in Serial Experiments Lain was about "the wired", or a more modern version of the internet. Everywhere you turn you see wires and poles that represent the connections between people... Both the real life connections and the "wired" connections. In the world we live in we tend to think that our real life connections are good, but in reality they aren't much better than the connections we have in "the wired". The series explored the boundry between what is actually "real" and what we think is real.

I say keep the wires. And make them even more prominent."

Since you are probably going to use a snowy background, why don't you try to add a texture to her skin that makes it look like she has goose bumps. Then it might be like someone just opened the door and that's the reason she pulled her legs up close.

There's a reason the background is plain. It's only because the screen cap has the same background, and I wanted to produce a version of it that is just like the original.

What I thought about doing for the background was putting in a lake with the angel feather motif from the show as a background, but that idea is getting away from me. It's one of those ideas that you know can be done but you're not sure how to do it.

I'll add an update with some of the abstract backgrounds I worked up in a while.

"Hey everyone.

I started with this screencap.



So I vectored it into version that is basically the same as the original, but in widescreen.



After lots of messing around I decided I wanted to keep within the same color scheme, but then try to and capture some of the fun and forboding of the show. I removed the in between versions to put in this update and changed the title of the thread.



Tell me, What do you think?

That was a quick cleaning, I know I have a lot of work on the hair area of the white outlines.

I never do a full extraction till I get an idea what I want to in a composition. I wouldn't worry about the extraction just yet, but rather look at how to get the background colors and the characters colors to blend better. You can either turn up the brightness on the background or tone down the character. The snow motif is a good direction to go I think.

Once you do that consider ways to "marry" the character image to the background. A light source overhead, a shadow underneath, footprints in the snow, snowflakes made in a similar way as those crystals you like... Once you get that together it'll be a joy to clean it all up. =)"

That's what I've been working on getting across. And not just that, but also you're playing the game and can see the opposing deus... Sekanou Rookie, Suzahara Misaki.

Trouble is, if you're the opposing angel, your going to lose. :P"

"Photoshop, definately. I know that it's expensive, but you can get for pretty cheap Photoshop Elements 3 that does nearly everything the full photoshop does. In some cases it's actually better because it has some things simplified."

This is going to sound like knitpicking, (and it is), but wouldn't the moon in the window cause a bit of shine on the table? I just set up a shiny surface and looked at it with the same orientation as you have with the moon... It's not much but it will really sell that shot. It would be like a gradient... and this is the part that's counterintuitive... It gets stronger on the side of table CLOSEST to the camera, and even leaves a light strip along the edge closest to the camera.

Hm. Does anyone possibly know where I could get a higher quality image of that Dark Riku picture? I'm having trouble finding one...

Does anyone have imput on the font? Or suggestions for the border.

Also, I don't plan on getting rid of the duplicate image. What exactly makes it "ruin" the wallpaper? It has to do with Repliku... so there are two of Riku.

Hi there,

About the double Riku: It is confusing to someone who doesn't know about the game. Also, you don't really want to *spoil* that aspect of the game, since it's supposed to be a surprise. On the other hand if you want to "suggest" that there is something different about Riku, you can lighten the contrast on the second Riku and work on a sort of "ghosting" look. Unless you try, you never know what might happen.

They used to call "a happy coincidence" serendipity. Sometimes neat things happen when you least expect it.

What you might do if you don't like the scan is vector the image. Granted there's a lot of detail there to work with but it might be worth it.

"Just updated the OP with a new render. I'm serious, I want some feedback here. Granted I may be breaking some of the rules a bit by pushing a bit of realism, but I think it's interesting to try something different.

There's a bit of symbolism here. The heat waves coming up from the layer have a bit of a demonic appearance to them, while the light from above is perfect and all reaching. I think what I'm trying to express here is that it's not necessarily evil to be intense and angry when it's important enough. I'm seeing more of a passionate look in Hikaru's face as I work on this. In fact, this came from a group of screencaps from the show... It has a lot of camera pans from bottom to top that can easily be merged into one great big image. It comes in episode 23, Hikaru vs. Wizard. "

Try on thing next... try hitting INVERT on the background. This will invert the color scheme to the complimentary colors of the scan. Post the results, I'll bet it will rock."

"Do some shaving around the outline here and there, I'm sure you can see where the problem areas are. Try tinting the scan a few different colors, sepia, magenta... Then use the same the background idea you have here, but with primary colors that contrast with your tinted scan.

hmm looking nicer ^_^

well the background is okay but it looks kinda blurry to me..? not sure if it's supposed to be that way or not.
I also see some problems with the extraction...you might wanna fix that.
Is it just me or are there 2 heads on the dude's shoulders? o_o
Also the top part of the character's hair looks like a screenshot sort of...you might wanna fix that.

LOL... the "two heads on the dude's shoulders" are the reflection maps. They might still be a little too noticable, so I'll probably have to tone that down a bit. I warped the image and overlayed it onto the surface of the shoulder pads. Hey, I have photoshop here, why waste all that power, eh? I know it's not something you expect to see in an anime/manga style wall, but that's the point of art. It's supposed to be unexpected. "

"I'm pretty sure that the large head is going to go... To be honest with you, I like vectoring but in the end too many people leave it at that. A bunch of solid colors and very little lighting or contrast. This has been vectored but I really needed a softer look to bring out a little more dramatic tone.

By the way, can anyone tell me who Hikaru's opponent might be? I just finished up the reflection map for a certain area... It's becoming a trademark I guess for me, hidden details.

I'm not a big fan of "bigHeads" either, but I'm trying to find a way to connect Misaki and Hikaru as deus and angel. I removed the head on another render. Maybe I'll try and screencap a frame that has the chair that they sit in and blend that into the background. Maybe you didn't notice it, but I used the ocean scene as the tone mape for the arena. Without it the arena is bland with just a gradient at the top.

If I can get this to work I'll do a series of them for each deus/angel. Hatoko/suzuka and Ohjiro/wizard would be next since I have some great material to work with for them already.
