Highlighted
This wallpaper captures the urban essence that proliferated the art of Ghost in the Shell in every incarnation of the series. Phill does an amazing job of capturing a moment of surrealism.
While there are a few, stray building angles and shadows, you find that your eye forgives the minor details and instead focuses on the overall scene that is larger than life, with lights trailing off into infinity.

What do you think? Angelic layer (same thread, updated)

"Update*LOL... There'll be some "creepy" feelings I guess, because I choose a different headshot of Misaki. There was a lot of talk in the series about the passion of the deus coming through in the angel, so I went that route with it.
I made an arena background, put in the lights and other environmental bits. Completely redid Hikaru, this time with as much precision as I could stand. Basically a new extraction, hight detail, smoother lines. I'm hoping that there is a sense of power that shows through in the pose and the lighting.
Also, it's not letterboxed anymore. It's 1440 x 900, which is all I ever do anyway... Walls at that resolution are hard to come by.
Tell me what you think.

"This is a 1024 x 768 version of a 1440 x 900 image. I "letterboxed" it to preserve the aspect ratio.
My Idea here was to try and achieve a 3D appearance on a 2d image. I think I struck a good balance between the light source and the character. I also spent a good deal of time devising a way to get the wraparound light to show around the far side of the body near the lower right. I've seen this in photographs over and over again but never could get the effect to look right until now (although in the end I decided to exagerate it a bit). I think the motion blur helps sell the effect.
Any comments would be appreciated.
UPDATE*
Instead of posting at the bottom I'll just make things more confusing and post an update here too so it's not as hard to find.
This is the one I finished last night. The one under excludes Misaki's face... I also toned down the relflection map on Hikaru's shoulder pads... it was just too bright.
Update* I had to basically handpaint the seat with Misaki in the background... I started with crap and wound up with a pretty good element. I'm hoping that it's obvious that it's supposed to blurred because of the depth of field.
Comments welcome."

"New version.
1) rain no longer obscures Characters
2) reflection of characters no longer overexposed
3) overall exposure adjusted upwards to fill the surrounding area
How's the feel now? This version is 1024 x 768... I like my large format version better but this is what most people have."

"You just gave me a great idea. The rain needs to disappear from the sun drenched areas. Like it's cutting through the rain.
Improving the image quality on the characters isn't a problem. That's on it's way. The grafitti is what you find on these overpasses in Rome. I actually lifted the graffiti from the anime, there's tons of it in that. "

"That's the trick with this new technique I'm using. I can adjust the exposure of the image after the fact. I have yet to do the highlighting work on the cityscape in the background, so that's on it's way. The brick wall is there in accordance with archetecture in Rome. There are many roadways that are elevated and made of brick... and covered with grafitti of course. I could change it to concrete. And the signature is just there for now... I plan for it to be a part of the grafitti on the wall. Already picked out the font for it :)The extraction is being cleaned up as I go. One thing though is in the depth of field elements, the white areas are actually waterdroplets clinging to the branches. I might have to work on that a bit if it just looks bad.
The thing about the character size is I want them to be small. I updated the link above to a 1024 x 768 version that shows the actual size of the characters. I wanted them to be small as though lost in a world that doesn't want them. And you're right, the reflection is a bit too bright, but I was freehanding that part... I'll have to roll back the exposure.
Thanks everyone, keep the comments coming."

"About the cleaning... Keep in mind it's raining in the image. Also How do you mean crowded? I'm particular about composition so I could use some input there as well."

2nd Attempt, Is it ready to be submitted?

"What I would do is take the blur tool in whatever program you use, set it's oppacity to around 40 or 50%, then lightly go over the lines in the foreground character to smooth out the the image a bit.The next thing I'd do is a bit tricky, but it's fun once you get good at it. I learned this trick from Paul Debevic's papers on HDR lighting. Copy the layer you have your forground character on. Then lower the brightness of the copied image but also increase the contrast. Experiment around to taste on the actual levels. Then take your eraser, set it to 100% oppacity, with feathered edges around 16-25 pixels.
Then just erase on the copied image wherever you'd like there to be highlights in the image. You can even put in sunlight reflecting off of the hair if you want. Then you might adjust the color and brightness of the background to marry the two together. Also, if you adjust the oppacity of the copied image you just added highlights to, you can control the exposure of the image on the fly and make dozens of renders at different exposures.

"This wall paper features the girl's from Yu Aida's GunslingerGirl. I started out with a bland relection and dropshadow on a backdrop with logo, but it was just too bland. 32 elements later... I just finished up the preliminary on the HDR effect. What I tried to do here is to isolate the characters in thier native environment in such a way as to make the viewer think that someone in eternity is maybe watching over them... Like the lines from the Ode to Joy suggest. There still needs to be some cleanup on the logo, but I already have a cleaned up one to replace the one seen here. I just want it to be on top so I'm saving that for last.I originally thought that the characters were too small, but the reason I went with this size was because I wanted them to be dwarfed by the environment... vulnerable in a world that's forsaken them. Only the light streaming from above seems to say "you are my children. I will not forsake you". On the issue of size, the original version of this is actually 1440 x 900, but I resized it to 1024 x 768 so that photobucket wouldn't shrink it.
What do you think? I think I can take it. Kerio!
Edit* Might help if I actually added the link, huh?

"Hi. I will I believe.
Right now I'm looking around to see where to upload stuff or how it's done on this forum. I like the siteware for this forum, it's more hightech than others, but I'm not sure where everything is yet."

"Yoroshukou onegaishimasu!I go by the name hillshireweeps. I've been making wallpapers for a while but that was because I needed something to fill out the size of my monitor. Not many wallpapers fit 1440 x 900. But I started looking around and thought I might resize some of them for other people.
I mainly make wallpapers of Angelic Layer and GunslingerGirl right now, but that doesn't mean I wouldn't make others. I like to use photoshop as my primary although I also sometimes use other programs if needed.
Iitikimasu! "
