After months of work, chanelqueen17 has created a gorgeous scene of Alice and Oz from Pandora Hearts, using scans that didn't even feature both characters together. Even after spending so much time on matching the details of the characters to their new looks, chanelqueen17 didn't stop there and went all out on the background too! This wallpaper definitely needs to be seen!

double charge on scans
2 years 2 months ago
"I've noticed that when i download a scan, i'm being charged double what it should be. I just got this, and was charged 40 papers for it. I click once on it, wait for it to load, and save the image, so there's no obvious reason (that I see) for the double charge. No F5 shenanigans, is what I'm getting at. :PI haven't noticed if all scans do this, but whenever i take the time to look, it does. This happens with both ie7 and firefox 2.0.0.6.
Not a big deal, but it is annoying."

Vista Vs. XP
2 years 2 months ago
"Just a small note... the general consensus seems to be that xp is better in many ways than vista, but what seems to be forgotten is that xp is at the second service pack level. vista is still at gold (SP0) status. sp1 for vista is still some months away, and there aren't many changes expected, just a giant update rollup. and for those who remember back to 2001, xp sucked major ass then, and continued to do so even into sp1. sp2 made huge changes to the core of the os, vastly improving xp on several facets. so i guess what i'm trying to say is that vista is another step, just as xp was, and there are always hardware and software changes that must occur with such a step. to all those to which this applies, kwitcherbitchin'."View
Vista Vs. XP

"@~iindigo1) There are really only 4 versions in the US, and they more or less have XP equivalents.
home basic = xp home
home premium = xp media center
business = xp professional
and ultimate is home premium + business
2) Yeah, much of the UI changes dont make much sense to me either. A specific example would be in explorer, say in any folder. When I click the drop down for the address bar, why does it show me websites I've been to? If I wanted to see that, I'd load a browser.
3) I don't see why there's so much bitching about aero requirements. Vista requires 512mb of ram, and attempting to use any less and expect it to work well would be a bit like running xp on 128mb of ram and trying to multitask: slow. I built this computer here for my dad, and since he won't be playing any games anytime soon, it won't have a dedicated graphics card. The onboard is a GeForce 6150, which is basically a GeForce 4 mx, and it runs aero just fine. I've also tested aero on an ati radeon x300, and it works fine on it too. And when I say 'fine', understand that the slightest slowdown bugs the hell outta me.
4) Aero, glossy? Well, I have no idea what you mean. ;) And you do know that vista has 3 UI modes, right? There's aero, there's the bitmap-based stuff that xp introduced to windows, then classic from 2k.
5) yeah, m$ should have spent a little less time in the 'rearranging the UI to make less sense' department, and focused on actual code improvement more.
6) I agree completely with you on this one. dx9 has passed its prime, and dx10 has incredibly high hardware requirements to be worth using. From what I've read, the only way to get dx10 to work at playble levels (something higher than 30fps) requires a GeForce 8800gts or higher. an 8600gts just won't do, nor will a radeon 2600xt. They're just too slow to handle the dx10 stuff at consistantly playable levels.
7) well, m$ doesnt have the luxury of having a complete monopoly of every programming API available on the pc, so such a request just wouldn't go far. I do think most developers would see it as a good idea, but if I know m$ at all, they'd fuck the whole process up and try to make developers to get a license or something. I mean, they are an evil empire, ya know.
8) It doesn't seem they have a choice with backwards compatibility. Every time a new windows version comes out, there's always a small, but very loud, group of bastards who whine about how program xyz-pileofshit-compiled-when-dos-was-hot won't run at all. That's a large part of the problem; in order to secure the os better, improve the underlying services, or rewrite the entire kernel from scratch, they have to break something else in the process. So they (usually) opt to just tack the new stuff on top of the old. This doesn't always work, but it keeps the complaining to a dull roar. If you ask me, windows seven should have little or no code from either xp or vista. To hell with backward compatibility. If m$ does some decent work in the code, it could be a hell of an OS. What saddens me somewhat is that I know it won't happen. It'll just be another windows release, with little to separate it from the last version.
9) yeah, a more module-based windows is what vista should have been. windows seven won't see the light of day for a while. Let's hope m$ gets a clue before it hits RTM.
10) heh, yeah. Longhorn was way better.
weelllllllllllllllll, just another 2 pennies in the jar...

"@-sibalthose popups are the UAC, and yeah, it's a highly annoying "feature" that m$ felt gracious to give us. but it doesnt take much to disable it. i've disabled UAC, windows defender (cuz it's a POS), and even disabled the entire security center and its related services. it took me a little bit of tinkering, but everything's in the GUI. no registry edits are needed.
also, i haven't tried halo, but i know for certain that battlefield 2 and just about every game/app that i was told wouldnt work in vista (either partially or at all), works just as well as in xp. i wish nero 6 worked tho. cuz nero 7 is a huge step backward.

"I'm in a bit of unique situation here, and since i'm currently bored out of my mind, i feel like typing it all up.my xp machine went thru a hard drive failure (not the first, and likely not my last) a little over 2 weeks ago. i had just built a new system for my dad, but he's in iraq, so here it sits for a month, until he's taken off active duty. i already had a test install of vista x64 on the machine, so i used it to recover what i could from my nearly dead drive before shipping it off. i've been using that same vista install since, and i'll soon be going back to xp once i have the hard drive in a couple days.
first off, you need a dual core cpu at minimum. this computer has an athlon 64 3600+ brisbane (1.9ghz)..slow, yes, but it performs well in everything i've thrown at it. it even manages to play battlefield 2 and america's army pretty nicely.
seconly, 2gb of ram is pretty much minimum now. with xp, 1gb or even 512mb of ram was plenty for most uses. vista changes the game alot. 1gb bare minimum, 2gb is nice, and 4gb+ is the ideal. dont like paying for more ram? too bad. requirements go up with each successive version of a product, especially in the case of the OS. dont believe me? remember when 16mb of ram was 'massive' for windows 3.1? yeah, i lived thru that.
thirdly, you need a good graphics card with a matching driver. the el cheapo cards that so many have gotten accustomed to with xp simply wont do well in vista. a geforce 7600gs or better, or a radeon x1600pro or better is pretty much what i mean. and as far as dx10 hardware, no less than an 8600gts, or a radeon 2600xt. again, hardware requirements trend upwards.
fourth, for the love of god, RTFM, get proper drivers (from the manufacturer), and google for compatibility problems that could arise. i'm using the least compatible version of vista (x64), yet the only problems i've had, i was expecting. every driver must be 64 bit if u'll be using x64. no exceptions. and all drivers must also be digitally signed (dont worry, nearly all are).
most of the issues that people are having are easily solved if they'd bother to do 10 minutes of research. for example, most people would agree that UAC is annoying as hell. i'm in that crowd. it pissed me off when i was beta-testing. but i have a way around it now. i dont disable it, i use the in-built administrator account as my own. i do this by using vLite, and having it skip the user creation. since i run as this account, i never seen any UAC popups, nor do i have to use the 'run as administrator' option, as i already have those credentials. and spare me the warnings of using this account. i've been using the in-built admin account since i first learned how to use it in xp. and i've never had any virus, worm, trojan, keylogger, spyware, malware, or any other garbage infect me. i know this because nod32, kaspersky portable, adaware, and spybot s&d tell me so.
i also dont have to use the compatibility modes on anything, which was surprising to me. my commit charge is typically around 700mb from cold boot (without sidebar) with messenger clients, ventrillo, and a couple browser windows open, it hovers around 900mb. i disabled a few services while i was tweaking. superfetch and windows defender, for instance, have been disabled. a few others, but i wont go into detail, as i'm sure anyone still reading this has sore eyes by now. well, that's it, i guess.
holy crap, long post..."

"The restarts are possibly the result of an overheating cpu...that's common with laptops, especially...the solution is to clear out the dust from the cpu heatsink/fan assembly, if that's possible. i had to do that with a friend's laptop. a good idea is to do that on a cleared and clean surface, like a table, and to be especially careful when removing the screws so as not to lose them. that would be very bad-joll"

Capital Punishment.
3 years 2 weeks ago
"First off, capital punishment is NOT a detterent, as most crimes are of the impulse-type...and for those who premeditate it, they are typically too crazy and/or determined to care about punishment...so, the only real way that capital punishment can ever be an effective deterrent is two-fold...1) make the whole ordeal televised, and un-edited. 2) rename capital punishment to 'public execution'...the word execution instantly conjures images of death, while punishment brings to mind a wrist-slapping...tell me i'm wrong...need more? capital punishment should be kept and exercised regularly for money.
i'll explain...it cost taxpayer dollars for each inmate to enjoy the relative freedom of prison...prison in the us is a joke...sure, you might become somebody's b*tch, but other than that, you have nothing to worry about..u get 3 meals a day (it's been said that the meals given to prisoners are far better than what we feed our children in elementary school cafeterias), clothing (horizontal stripes are all but gone, orange is in!), not to mention a soft bed to sleep on (thanks to 'human rights' activists :D)...
i cant speak for anyone but myself, but it seems rediculous to pay $50,000 or more per year for 1 prisoner to live...if the crime is serious enuf (can you say homocide?), i say we kill the mofo...and the execution method should be based on how his/her victim(s) died (use your imagination)...
also, lethal injection was developed by hitler's personal physician (forget his name)...need i explain that one further?
which is why we in America have an endless appeals system."

Virtual Memory.
3 years 1 month ago
"@tori-kunyour're mistaken, xp does not delete anything stored in the pagefile at shutdown, not unless you tell it to...it's a registry tweak, and only benefits system security (someone could get information stored in a pagefile, posing a security risk, but they'd need physical access to the system long enuf to pull the hard drive and copy the file from another system)...anyone wanting to know exactly what should utilize the glory of google :D
and to respond to the first post, you should never need to clear out the pagefile (aka virtual memory), as windows does this as needed...pagefile size should be set by how much physical memory is installed in the system...the more ram you have, the less space you need to allocate to a pagefile...also, set the size manually, making the minimum and maximum sizes the same, this will force windows to keep a static pagefile size...if you see "out of memory" errors, increase the pagefile size a bit, reboot, and see if it happens again...
i have 1.5gb of ram, and a pagefile on C: that's 128mb...i have another 1gb pagefile on my D: drive, on a separate physical drive, on a different ide channel from the first...hope this helps somewhat :P"

Blue ray vs HD DVD?
3 years 2 months ago
"@$v0dkacheck your facts...i said "i believe", not that i was right...ur list of who is supporting hd dvd is a tad short...fox is supporting both, time warner has decided to wait (last i saw anything; this may have changed..), and since warner bros. is owned by time warner, they're rolled into that too...universal announced they're not supporting blu-ray...google it...mgm, lions gate, paramount, etc are owned by majority by some parent company, beit disney, time warner, fox, sony, or some other company that has too much money in its bank accounts...
twentieth centry fox is the same company as fox, just the full name...and who is 1k studios? i dont recognize that name...what recent movies have they released? i'm asking cuz i really dont know...
and all of this hubbub doesnt change the fact that both of these HD media formats are expensive! the price of the retail xbox 360 hd dvd reader unit was leaked from a japanese source...i forget the exact yen cost, but it was about 200USD...seems steep to me...after all, it's just a damn disc reader! not to mention that u'll need a 720p, 1080i, or 1080p HD set to take advantage of all those extra lines...IMO, HD discs are a dumb idea until more people start getting HD sets...it's like playing a xbox1/ps2 on a 13" tv, then replacing the xbox1/ps2 with an xbox360/ps3...would anyone be able to see the difference on such a low-res, tiny display? probly not..and if ya do see a difference, it wont be too significant..i've seen the difference between the xbox1 and the xbox360, and it seems m$ did a nice job on it...i'll never buy one, as i'm not much of a fan of consoles, but i can still play around with a friend's unit for kicks, cant i? :P

Blue ray vs HD DVD?
3 years 2 months ago
"For those wondering which format will dominate, all you need to do is look at the missions of such formats and comparitively look at who is supporting each...the primary function of these formats is for HD video and audio content, not games...has anyone looked at the current dvd standard? while most movies can easily fill a DVD9 (~8.5GB), a pc/console game has a very hard time filling that space, unless they dont use compression on anything...a disc that can hold 30/50/80/whatever gb of space is useless unless there's something to fill that space...as of yesterday, i believe, there are only 2 major movie studios (besides sony itself) to help sony sell their BD standard to the residential buyer: disney and fox (fox is supporting both BD and HD DVD) ...almost all of the remaining studios have sided with HD DVD...why? simply put, hd dvd is cheaper, easier to produce, and easier to convince consumers that the purchase is worth doing...
but, if your like me, you wont side either way yet, as the dust has yet to settle...anyone remember the dvd+ VS dvd- that was happening in the early dvd burners? then the dual format (+/-) units were developed, and it didnt matter which you liked better, as one drive would read and write both discs...
back to BD and HD DVD...ricoh announced a couple weeks back (i dont have a link, unfortunately) that they had developed a hybrid laser mechanism that would read both formats, but they had yet to get that laser to write to both...they are still working on it tho, and with any luck, a consumer model will be ready to produce not long after both formats make their official debuts...
personally, i dont care wich format prevails, as they both have benefits and problems...i expect sony to have a hard sell with the ps3...nevermind how many people are supporting it...how many of you will actually buy one within a year of its release? changes the question a bit, doesnt it?...but, this thread isnt about consoles, so i'll migrate back on-topic...
blue ray does appear to have the advantage technologically, but so did betamax...anyway, as the discs for either format will undoubtedly be ungodly expensive, i'll stick with my dvd5 format for the time being...and dont get me started on how easy it'll be to convert a BD/HD DVD movie to divx/xvid/mpeg4...the copy protections they use today are a joke...the last released version of dvd decryptor is about a year old (correct me if i'm wrong), and it still breaks the encryption like a 64 bit passphrase...it's really just a bad joke...
anyway, i'll wait for a hybrid to be perfected before jumping on any bandwagon, and i'll continue to use my current tech until then...(as i'm sure most people will do anyway)..."

Internet Explorer 7 (IE7)

"Nearly all of the "savvy ppls" that i know seem to cringe when they learn that i've used IE for 99% of my browser usage...everyone believes that firefox is immune to security threats, yet in my own testing, i've seen firefox take almost as bad a beating as IE in virtual machines...and truth be told, both are great browsers..it just seems that everyone forgets that any and all browsers require modification to the default config in order to be considered secure...and for some history, according to employees of MS, IE7 wouldn't have EVER come to be if mozilla hadn't stepped up to the plate and snag some market share...on a side note, i always wondered how there could be a market share for products that are provided free of charge...anyway, i always mod the hell out of my windows installations, as anyone who's ever seen one of my installs can attest to...
i dont care much for the fanboys/girls out there who root for one side only...if they were really so enlightened, they'd see the good that's coming from all fronts of the browser war (if it is a war)...without firefox, tabbed browsing wouldn't be so popular (and no, firefox is NOT the first browser to be able to do tabs...i forget the name of it, but tabs first appeared back in 1996 [roughly])...opera has also contributed (i've never tried it myself, but i've heard good things about it from many sources)...and if MS had never announced the development of IE7, FF2.0 wouldn't be in development either...
so, in the end, competition=good...IE7 beta 2 build 5358 is my current browser of choice, but i do look forward to trying out the new firefox once it's in beta...i may even give opera 9 a spin too when it's finished..."
