After months of work, chanelqueen17 has created a gorgeous scene of Alice and Oz from Pandora Hearts, using scans that didn't even feature both characters together. Even after spending so much time on matching the details of the characters to their new looks, chanelqueen17 didn't stop there and went all out on the background too! This wallpaper definitely needs to be seen!

Oh ha yeah i've only used illustrator for a little bit once before but i do remember that by default, all the shapes end up on one layer. i had to keep on reminding myself to start on a new one. xD;

I've never gotten the hang of vectoring in Photoshop, so you've gotten me beat there. I just export/import my vector work and do small additional vectors sometimes in PS. Back when I was working on a Graphic Design 2 year degree, I got told that vectors are much better quality when done in Illustrator and exported as a pdf, so it's been ingrained in my mind to use that other than photoshop for them. Haha.

asa01
the next step to work on, as you probably know since you plan on doing yet more tweaking, would be to go back and ease up the transitions from darker to lighter parts. in the old version, the edges are distinct enough for the look of the style but also subtle enough to avoid awkward lines that pop out all over the place. in the new version, the edges are somewhat too evident. keep the warmth; give it back the softness. then it should be good. :D

Excellent! And yes, I know what you mean. I'll probably go back and adjust them individually as I can so that it's a little less striking. \o/ Now to get to work on that and then the rest of the wallpaper! I've got a lot to go, but this is a good learning experience. Here's hoping the whole thing turns out okay. I've still got to figure out the background of the thing too, gah!

Do you think I could contact you as this progress goes along for crit here and there? I could PM you or leave a comment on your userprofile. (I'm really not all that familiar with the website, I'm rather quiet and have not talked to many people here.) I don't have many artistically inclined friends I talk to on a daily basis, so this has been a great help to not only improve the vector and the wall, but my artistic skills in general. I greatly appreciate that.

I'll probably keep updating this as I get more work for it done though. Here's hoping it all goes well :)"

Yuri and Yaoi Manga/Anime...Hate or Like?

4 months 1 week ago

"I think the majority of Yaoi based manga/anime are very translucent, cliche, and boring. The characters are often stereotypical, oversimplified and boring. Most of the classic examples of "uke" are simply girls with male anatomy. I enjoy yaoi/slash, but I believe that the characters should be able to act masculine without falling into the weepy, over feminine style that seems popular.

The same goes for the "seme" of series. They all look very similar, and act in a similar manner. This is why the slash I tend to enjoy tends to be from fandoms that are are NOT categorized as Yaoi, simply because they do not fall into those stereotypes.

I've never personally been into Yuri, mostly because I prefer male characters. I believe it suffers from the same sort of issues though."

Critique please...!!

4 months 1 week ago

"Hello ~kissaten13!

I have a few suggestions for your wall :) It's an interesting concept, and I think for a first revision you are headed down the right track! Keep at it!

As for critique, I really think that you should pick a better over all background color. The neon green is grating on the eyes. Keep in mind that people will be using this on their computer backgrounds, so any color that could possibly strain the eyes should be used sparingly, or wisely. A gradient of green might be the better way to go here.

Are you trying to make these look like photographs? If you are, I suggest doing a GIS (google image search) and looking at photo edges. Usually there are no edges to a photo, unless they're of the instant kind, and those are distinctly different from what you've got going here. A little bit of rendering around the edges wouldn't hurt.

The scans you've used seem to have been extracted nicely, but could still use some cleaning. I would suggest some color adjustments, and perhaps a little blending/smudging/redrawing to make the colors less grungy looking. The background in some of the "photos" makes this especially obvious because they are either gradients or manipulated images. I agree that some of the backgrounds do not fit, and could use more natural looking backgrounds if they are indeed meant to look like photographs."

Vector Retry - Help Please!

"The tool you should be using to vector is the pen tool in either photoshop or illustrator. These are the two programs that I use for vectoring, so if you are using another program, I don't have that information.

Here's a screen shot of the tool you should be using for vectoring.

Using this tool, you should be tracing around shapes to make the image, though I think you have that concept down. This includes borders/line work, and makes them look a lot better than "stroked" line work."

Water wind- Second Attempt

4 months 1 week ago

"Hello there ~Pom!

I have a few suggestions, and a few comments for you about your wallpaper! I like the over-all concept of the wall quite a bit, but there is a lot of room for improvement.

First, I think the main subject of your wallpaper (the character, I'm assuming) should be a lot larger than she is presented here. I believe enlarging her so that she takes up 1/3rd of the wall instead of such a small portion would look a lot better. In addition, is she on a blend layer, or not at 100% opacity? I can see through her in parts. I don't find this particularly appealing. She's a little bright too, as if the brightness/contrast has been turned up. I would try to adjust that and the color levels as well.

In addition to this, the water you've added in is obviously a brush, tube, or what have you. I would suggest getting reference images of splashing water/waves, and using that in your wallpaper. As it stands, the part that is not along the edges does not look like water at all outside of coloring.

I would also suggest a better background. The one you have now suggests clouds, and from what I can tell seems to have been put through a lot of photoshop filters. This never looks really good, and detracts from the quality of the wallpaper. A nature scene or sky would suit best in my opinion, but my personal weak point in wallpapering is backgrounds."

adjusting the opacity and getting rid of the blue shapes has nicely reduced the grayish feel to the skin, both on the blue and white backgrounds. however, i still feel that somewhere between now and when you finish the entire wall, the overall skin tone could still use a bit more warmth. :] still looking a little grayish on my monitor.

Excellent! Glad to see that there's progress in that regard.

I'll have to admit, that I've made a huge error when it comes to the shading. It's all on one layer, which is making going back and editing it all a little bit tedious, but I'm managing. I sure have learned my lesson about each color being on a separate layer though! Jeez!

I've gone through and as best as I can, adjusted each color so that they're more saturated. This includes all of the peachy/orange tones as well as a red layer that I added myself.they're all enormously intense at 100% opacity now. This seems to have helped the warmth quite a bit at least in my opinion. What do you think?

User posted image User posted image

I'm probably going to go back and adjust a little more after I get some more feed back from you, but comparing this to the original image, it looks a lot better.

asa01
maybe you could try lightening some of the tones and accordingly increasing the opacity of those layers to keep the same visibility. haha this is getting kind of wordy but i hope you understand what i mean.

Don't worry about being wordy! I'm following you completely fine :) I'm working on an art degree right now and I'm pretty familiar with Illustrator as a whole, so don't worry about losing me! If there's something I'm not understanding I'll ask you.

asa01

as for what you have right now by using multiply and screen, i'm thinking your shading layers themselves are quite desaturated themselves? because multiply and screen, while producing less saturation change than a number of other blend modes, say, color burn and color dodge, have made more noticeable differences in terms of saturation for my vectors.

Looking at them in the color select pallete, they're all on the right half of the color picker box thing (AAAA technical terms). So they're not particuarly desaturated, though they're not exactly the brightest they could be. I have turned the opacity of the layers down, because it was -way- too dark once I changed from normal -->multiply/screen.

I wonder if part of the problem is that the colors are being compared to a completely white background, which has the tendency to make colors look funny? That -could- possibly be the problem, because they look a little more punchy on a colored fill that I put in to check things.

Here's another example, with the opacity turned up, and that blue background I put in to get rid of the possible washout issue with the white. In the second example, I went through and removed all of the blue colored shapes, replacing them with another sample skintone, as well as double checking my base tone. It turns out it was a little bit on the gray side, so that may have been what was doing it. Also the opacity is down a bit more in the second one. I think it looks like a bit of an improvement.

Beside it I've put in another plain white background for comparison, just in case.

"I played around a bit with blend modes (Go figure not EVEN thinking about using these to begin with.) There are some things I need to fix, but this is a rough go of what the differences are. They're fairly subtle, though it seems to have gotten rid of the gray problem perhaps?

This is also closer to the size Oz will be in the finished wallpaper, since there's so much more that's going to be into the wall.

are you manipulating layer blend modes right now for your shading layers or are you changing only layer opacity/fill?

Just opacity for now, though outside of the blue and red shadowing, all of the colors are direct (but toned down) eyedrops of the image below. I wasn't fond of how orange he was in the scan. I suspect this is because it's a manga scan and probably colored with marker. I wanted something more natural for a skintone for him. I will have to try playing around with blend modes though.

Would you suggest doing away with the blue coloring? (I'm assuming this is what you're talking about when you mention him being gray.)

asa01
this particularly means that the layering is potent at suggesting the contour of a surface. be careful with that. for example, with his ear, the currently shading can be much better.

You are right, the contouring for it is off, though I have intended on going back and working on that more once I'm less frustrated with that part of him, hahaha."

"So, I've been trying to up the quality of my vectors, and have been inspired by a few that have been posted here on anime paper. I recently submitted this wallpaper, so you know about where I am with my current vectors.

Now, I've decided to do work on a Pandora Hearts wallpaper by combining a few scans into one. It's going to take a little redrawing, but I have a basic mockup.

Mockup

I've done all of Oz's outline, and have started on his coloring, which is what I would like crit on. The example of what I've done for him is below.

Oz's Coloring

I'm not at all comfortable with this new style of vectoring, so I feel a little awkward about how it looks. I would really appreciate any and all comments, crit, suggestions and questions. Thank you!

the hosting is my own domain, so please don't worry about bandwidth/image leeching."

"It's a long standing "industry standard" school of thought. Not from the hobbyist point of view but from the professionals in the business. For a long time, windows machines were behind macs in graphical power. That gap has been significantly closed now, and the difference between the two is pretty insignificant.

From what I've learned interning at a design studio, it comes down to habits, preference and familiarity with the Mac when it comes to applications."

And yet I've driven for nearly 4 years, without an accident, and without even being pulled over...

Well, I'm not saying you're a bad driver, am I? No, I'm not. :) People like you and I who do well with driving ( in our age group.) are sadly, a minority.

And I've driven for 7 years and the situation is the same. I'm also female. There's no reason to pull in misogynistic theories into an argument about safe drivers. (And don't get me wrong, I don't think all boys suck at driving, either. One of my friends is the best driver I know, and he's a boy.)

It's a shame that people have to be judged by what others in their specific gender or age group do, but the majority rules, it seems. But making steriotypical statements like "girls are the ones driving around on their cellphones" is like taking a step backwards. I know plenty of boys who gab on the telephone just as much as some of the mouthy girls I know."

College Experince

"I've always been interested in art, and the expression of ideas through drawing. Commercial art also intrigues me, especially because just about everything we used had to be designed by someone. From the packaging on a box of cookies to the label on a bottle of glue to the billboards along the highway, and designs on the cups you get at Starbucks.

I'm getting side tracked, haha. XD

Anyway. I've got two associates degrees, and now I'm working on my bachelors. The two associates are in computer animation and graphic design, while the bachelor's I'm pursuing is in Studio Art. What do I want to do you ask? I want to teach art, and do graphic design freelance in my spare time.

It took me a while to come to this conclusion, but If you had asked my Jr. High self what I wanted to do, you would have just gotten a very blank stare. I didn't actually start worrying about what I wanted to do in college and beyond until my last two years of high school. I don't think you need to worry about things like your college major yet, especially since you're only in Jr. High. Enjoy the experience that you're having now, and give your main subjects a chance to trigger an interest in you that you'd be willing to develop in the years to come. "

I just want car insurance for teenage males to drop. Teenage girls have to pay less because they have "less of a risk of causing accidents"--yet they're the ones yakking on the cell phone while driving.

Gender is not a qualifier when it comes to talking on the cellphone while driving. Statistically, males do get into more accidents when driving. This includes accidents caused by speeding, drinking and driving, and just plain not paying attention. I'm not saying that girls don't do this as well, but it is -proven- that males have more accidents in cars than females."

Teen Drivers

"Drinking and driving, being distracted while driving, and speeding, are all done by people regardless of their age. Young people indeed, are one of the groups at highest risk of dying in an automotive accident.

Car Accident Statistics
For those in the age group of 1 to 30 years, the leading cause of death is due to being involved in a car accident. People, who are between 15 to 24 years, and those who are above 75 years of age, are the people who are most severely affected by car accidents.

What I think needs to be required, rather than punishing those who do in fact pay attention to the rules of the road, is to have stricter licensing laws for those under the age of 25 and those that are 70 and older. This would mean better testing to get learners permits, and even full licenses. An example would be a 3or so month recurring evaluation of the said driver's driving skills. I also believe there should be a no tolerance policy in regards to drunken driving (or driving while high, what have you), especially in these risk areas, but overall no matter what your age. "

Ai Yori Aoshi

"I think the vector's very well done, it's nice and clean, and doesn't look like it was done from a low quality source. I do agree that the background is a little lacking. It can be simple, and still be interesting.

I agree with the suggestion of text, but I would be careful with what you chose to put there. The anime title would be interesting, but I think a subtitle would be a good addition as well, so it's not just a floating "Ai Yori Aoshi" in the middle of a field of blue. Along the same line, a way to bridge the text to the vector image would be ideal, as it would help the viewer's eye float across the work better."

Why do people just have to tell evryone that they hate dubs?

2 years 6 months ago

"I'm personally having a hard time understanding what the OP really wanted us to talk about. She likes dubs, and likes them better than subs, and hates hearing people who like the opposite. I think it's kind of silly to restrict your views to one way of thinking just because you don't like it, but that's just my opinion.

As for the subject matter at hand, wether an anime is better dubbed or subbed really depends on two things for me. One, the quality of the acting in either the original language or the dubbed language. If either is sub-par it's going to be more difficult to enjoy the show than with better acting. Because of this, a lot of the older, horribly acted dubbed anime, is unwatchable for me. In these instances I seem to prefer the Japanse audio.

When both are acted equally well (Which has been happening more and more recently) I believe that what you prefer to watch depends on what you hear first. I originally heard and saw my first episode of Fullmetal Alchemist on CN one night when I couldn't sleep, and now I actually prefer the English to the Japanese, though I do enjoy both.

However, in the case of something like D.Gray-man, which has no dub yet, I adore the Japanese voice acting, and really; find myself worried about the voice choices the company that liscences it (if it does indeed get liscenced, but that's an entirely different thought process) will make.

It's all a matter of personal prefrence.
As for why people tell others what they do and do not like? I can only imagine that it's because they're curious about why someone would like something that they have no interest in, or it could be an attempt at starting a conversation."

"I'm in college (American, University for European folks.) and exams are rather different for me. There's still a lot of studying, but I feel a lot more prepared than I did back in highschool and Jr. High. I'm still stressing though, don't get me wrong.

Grades become completely unimportant once you get out into the working field, but in order to get into the working field, getting good grades and flying through our years of school comes in handy. I don't regret having this stress, because I believe that in the end, the skills I get from studying now will help me a lot later in life."

Does age really matter?

2 years 6 months ago

"It really depends on the age and mentality of both people in the relationship, as well as what is socially aceptable. For example, with todays standards, a 14 year old in a relationship with someone 5 years older (19) is both morally, and legally (at least, in both my country, and state) wrong.

Human beings take many years to develop fully, both mentally and physically. We are biologically one of the species that stays with our mothers for the longest amount of time, and for good reason. Not only because we have become so advanced that it takes 20 years of our lifetime to learn enough to get by in such a technology advanced world, but also because our physcial and mental selves are not fully developed untill we are at least mid teens. Even then, the mental processes needed to dive into today's society are no where near obtained by that age, and even then many people even my age, still lack the ability to know right from wrong, or make the correct descisions for their life.

But I'm getting sidetracked. Because of the reasons mentioned above, both mental and physical obsticals can get in the way of relationships like the one I described above. However, there is indeed a double standard, say with adults. Easily, it can be seen that a 30 year old could date and love a 40 year old. But this is likely because they are both mature, fully developed adults, who are able to enter a relationship with equal consent.

I suppose I took this topic slightly differently from most, but I do believe younger teens, and teenagers in general, should date others that are closer to their age range. This works out better in the long run, for both hearts of those involved."

I suppose I'm a touch late on this whole introduction thing, but I wanted to get a feel for the community before I let myself worm my way out of the woodwork. I've slowly fallen in love with this place, and its community, and I hope that in the future I can contribute a lot more to it.

My name is Katie, and I'm a 23( 24 on the 25th. oh god! p(T_T)q emoticon ) year old Art Major, Japanese Minor. I already have degrees in computer animation and graphic design, but I currently do not hold a bachelors in either. I've been interested in anime to varying degrees for about 10 years, and I'm still going strong. My current favorites include Fullmetal Alchemist, D.Gray-Man, and Ouran High School Host Club. I do however, maintain a few constant favorites, which are older series (Rurouni Kenshin, will always be #1 <3 emoticon with Fushigi Yuugi, and Sailor Moon falling in there somewhere ).

Before this gets too long, I'll go on my merry way and prepare for my other final exams, but I hope to meet many people and make a lot of friends here, so hello, hello!"
