This wallpaper captures the urban essence that proliferated the art of Ghost in the Shell in every incarnation of the series. Phill does an amazing job of capturing a moment of surrealism.

While there are a few, stray building angles and shadows, you find that your eye forgives the minor details and instead focuses on the overall scene that is larger than life, with lights trailing off into infinity.

Jin could take Mugen

"I think jin would def win due to what you said. i was gonna bring up that same point. that dude who fought jin in the end looked like he was handling mugen pretty easily and jin managed to beat him. seems like jin could emulate that dude's style if he wanted and that dude's style was effective against mugen.

do you think america can make better anime than japan?

Most of us here are discussing about Dubbing. I've watched anime dubbed in chinese and cantonese. i can't say they are from china? I think we should all focus on Pure american / Japanese productions. Like the "teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles" or "spawn". Its when the original is in that original language where the emotions comes out completely. cos the show is catered to that language. i can't really expect too much from spongebob speaking Japanese. .

i agree. dubbing is in no way a good measure of american voice acting. voice actors in dubbed shows have to either slow down or speed up things to fit mouth movements that were intended for japanese. this limits the ability of the actor to express himself/herself in a natural way. "

Did anyone ever see samurai champloo

"Oh yeah my favourite piece of music in this show is that rzaesque music that plays in the sunflower field flashbacks.

there's a track called "sanctuary ship" on the soundtrack that's awesome but i didn't hear that anywhere in the show... and then there's some other really great pieces of instrumental hip hop in here.

"I thought this was a cool anime. i maintain it has the best fight scenes of any anime that i've ever seen. it kind of reminds me of those old zatoichi type movies with the plots. if there was a 2nd season i'd definitely watch it but i doubt that'd happen.

the episode that i really didn't like was that stupid zombie one. "

did this show make money/get good ratings?

my first thought is ... Have you ever seen Tmos ?
if you dont i can understand why you would ask such questions

just bringing some facts
the anime ranked at the 7th place of the best anime in Anime News Network
the anime and the main charas got high places in the polls of Newtype magazine

well from my point of view
i think there will be a sequel, according to the novels there are enough materials to support a new sequel
any Haruhiist would like to see Haruhi in anime .. i definifetly do

i've seen it and i love it but i just think that the main reason series tend to get a sequel is if the ratings in japan are high. i know it's popular on the internet but that doesn't necessarily meet it got high tv ratings. genshiken was really popular on the internet but from what i understand, the tv ratings for that sucked. well honestly i think no. NO! Yes true that MANGA in fact had their origins in Comic Novels of the west. But really what is Anime to us all? Its the Japanese qualities of thinking and manners that defines anime from cartoons. i mean take western " cartoons" like Spawn and Spiderman. What differences do they have with or beloved anime? well, i feel they do not have the traditional cultures within them. take a certain parrell series like Ghost In a Shell. It is modern but it holds the japanese culture within and not taking that culture like some sort of "Arty Farty" kind of gimmick. In The Matrix(which has mixes of western and japanese stylising) the Oracle's Body Guard is a stereotyped chinese man in chinese clothes with chinese Gung Fu. it felt somewhat uncalled for. Chinese guards aren't all like in Hong Kong Movies...Speaking Funnily accented english.

western style stories are very much different. i find western shows very one tracked. yes, in both generes, the good guy always wins. but, western "cartoons" are very much have a feeling of being seperate from emotion. Almost all japanese anime have emotion in them, (i'm taking the mature anime) no matter how comical or bloody it is, there are always the japanese qualities within. Feelings of responsibility, deep friendship, love. devotion, prosmucuity, pride, manners, social service... Anime mostly make a good balance of it all. Take Elfen Lied, its bloody, lots of topless scenes... but ultimately what is it in the story? about guilt, friendship, family and devotion. not many western "cartoons" have this quality. look at "the nightmare before christmas", "Sin City", Superman. They probably just skim these qualities on the surface. and not as deep as anime has. they try to stir feelings but always fall far far short. unlike how shows like "mai-Hime" and "Fullmetal Alchemist" have given.

Recently, There have been more mainstream "cartoons: which try to take on the name of Anime. Yup, teen titans for on. Even Totally Spies! or Samurai Jack. but they fail in terms of the story presented. The episodes are so segmented of sorts. You might say "Samurai Champloo" is just as such. but that series is connected with the three characters' emotions for each other. How their feelings for each other grows in each and every episode. though Disney's " Aang" (about a boy with special powers trying to stop a war) might come close.

i don't think there's that much culture in anime necessarily. we as western viewers see culture in it that we don't notice in our own media just because it's different. there's just as much american culture in something like batman as there is japanese culture in most animes. also i think the whole idea of having a genre being culturally linked is limiting. nobody really wants to see the same sorts of values in every program they watch.

also japanese media gimmickizes other cultures just as much as western media does. how many it seems like every harem anime has the same outrageous character for the jumpy western foreigner and so on.
japan is just as guilty for not treating outside cultures properly as we are in the west. there's a more wide range of issues discussed in american media in general than i tend to see in anime as well. like, you never see anything that deals with inter-culture interaction (in any meaningful way), economic politcal issues and things like that in anime. i mean there's some that gloss over it like noir but they haven't done it that great.

now i would say that so far there haven't been many cartoons out here that are as deep as a lot of anime that's been out but it is a speculative question. i thought spawn was a pretty emotional job but even not taking that into consideration, we are speculating about the future. i mean if america is able to create regular programming/movies that have sufficient emotional content (which they are... see: scorcese films etc. ) then as cartoons become more popular among adults, these sorts of things would naturally translate into adult media. Can kids learn values from watching ANIME?

do you think america can make better anime than japan?

1 year 10 months ago

"I think there are a lot of arguments that people are making in this thread that aren't too good...

1) americans mostly seen cartoons as just for kids

this used to be the case but the popularity of adult cartoons is definitely growing in america. adult swim is the most popular TV timeslot for males age 18-30 in america, dvd sales for show like cowboy bebop and samurai champloo are very good, people like samuel jackson have seen this trend and have decided to put money into anime-type series. I think the idea that americans won't accept cartoons for an adult audience is growing quickly extinct.

2) americans are unintellectual/american programming is dumbed down

to bring back the adult swim example, adult swim is the most highly watched time slot for males age 18-30 in the USA. What's on adult swim? 1) a lot of intellectual or at least dialogue based comedy shows like the boondocks or sealab and a lot of anime that most would agree are on the more creative side like paranoia agent and samurai champloo. even if a lot of programming on american tv is stupid, there is definitely a big market for smart shows.

3) there are copywrite issues so americans couldn't make a show like genshiken

this is pretty absurd. cheaply produced american tv is full of personality and pop culture references. robot chicken? animaniacs? family guy? south park? american tv is full of stuff that references other stuff. as long as you aren't using something to endorse another product/you aren't slandering it you should be able to use a popular reference. about the only think i saw in genshiken that was might not have been allowed on american tv was the songs in the ringtones.

4) censorship issues

well first of all, i like blood but it's not like you need it to make a good anime. noir was great and had no blood. also, you can show stuff on cable at night with as much blood as you want.

spawn the animated series was a pretty good show. i could see something like that being the prototype for american anime of the serious sort. "

what do you think of cowboy bebop??

1 year 10 months ago

"I dunno. i liked the world and characters of cowboy bebop (except for ed, she wasn't funny at all) but many of the individual episode plots were often pretty dull to me. certain episodes were good because they went into sci fi issues and then other episodes were good because they looked into character issues but then there are some episodes that say... look into sci fi issues but the issue in question is just too dull for a whole episode or they're just pointless overall like the episode with the guy where nobody could guess his name. "

do you think america can make better anime than japan?

1 year 10 months ago

"Considering that being japanese is part of the definition of anime, this is a difficult question to answer just because it's hard to know what you mean by american anime.

if you mean shows with anime style drawing then i mean... it's all up to the show. like the boondocks is as good as any anime show but at the same time there's nothing really that anime about it aside from the way people are drawn. it all really depends if the artists for good shows want to draw the shows with an anime style. you could also say that mission hill is sort of an anime style show if anyone remembers that one.

if you just mean more adult/serious type cartoons then something like spawn the animated series could probably do well in other countries and stuff. "

Do you Like Heroine in anime

1 year 10 months ago

"There are often better female leads in animes than males. most of the time i find the male characters follow the same boring nice guy stereotype.

i dunno why japanese women are into homo stuff so much. seems like any release for girls now has some kinda homosexual tinge to it. even something like fruit basket has a super fruity main male character (bad pun intended). i'm watching honey and clover now and this is so far the first shojo/josei anime i've watched where there hasn't been anything homo---but i'm still only 5 episodes into it.
