After months of work, chanelqueen17 has created a gorgeous scene of Alice and Oz from Pandora Hearts, using scans that didn't even feature both characters together. Even after spending so much time on matching the details of the characters to their new looks, chanelqueen17 didn't stop there and went all out on the background too! "Personally, I don't have much of an isse with your vector. It looks okay.. But I do have some comments on your overall composition.. The snowflakes around the character are a little distracting, especially around the character's hair and hands. That's probably why the mod mentioned about the 'vector refinement.' Another thing is the background itself.. the pattern you have at the back, with a blue-purple gradient.. I feel it's a little crowded, and that section could use a little cleaning up.. From my judgement, that pattern consists of some tree brushes and some miscellaneous lines.. Since you have a large white tree on the left, try to remove the trees that are part of your bg pattern, since one tree is enough in itself.. As for the text placement, you already guessed it. I would suggest putting it on the bg instead of on the character. That's my two cents worth.. Hope I helped.

Oh, and wait a little bit for more comments. It helps to hear at least two or three before you get started on making the changes. ^^"

"I've been stuck trying to come up with a good bg for the past month I was doing this, haha.. I think I got pretty sick of trying to strike a good balance between character and bg.. In the end, I just ditched it for a simple bg with just the bloodstains and the 'hitokiri' copy. Anymore suggestions?

"I posted this... twice before.. So if you do see this somewhere below, yes, I'm the same person (cause basically.. I can't bump an old post.. It's way too far below for most people in SZ to bother about it now..) Because I was away for two weeks and did not update my forum post or make any changes to my wall.. So.. Now that I'm back, and had time to rethink the wall, here goes for my fifth attempt.

"Well, my take on it... Colour your character. It doesn't have to be elaborate.. For your character to be just plain white, it doesn't draw the attention to itself, and it doesn't really tell your story. Try giving it some light tones, and you'll see the difference. If you still have the image of your character, make a copy, and colour it. If you're using photoshop, you could make use of one method which is to create a layer, and change the blend mode to 'multiply,' then colouring it. With that blend mode, you can colour your character without covering the outlines. The downside of this is that it is quite time consuming, but that's usually how I colour manga scans. Vectoring is faster, but I'm not exactly very good at it. If you want some tips on the colouring method I mentioned, just drop me a PM. I'm on my term break until January 8. I could do a little something for your reference.."

"Basically ~slapztik said it all.. The scan and bg is generally okay, though my eyes aren't sharp enough to tell you where the white spots were. Try enlarging it to look.

I believe the copy you are looking for is: "Hold it! I'm downloading!" and "Please keep away from the computer until the real owner returns and gives you the permission to use it or when the downloads are finished" and "Thank you for understanding"

And I agree with ~slapztik about the copy. You can save two versions.. One without the copy, so that anyone can download to use, and another one with the copy, for your personal use.. Hope I have been helpful.."

"Ahem... Sorry I took so long.. I was away from home for the past two weeks, and now that I'm finally home, I had the time to rethink my wall. Besides, while I was away, I had the opportunity to learn a little bit about vectoring. I'm still learning, so please bear with me.. Since the majority of the problems were with the hair, which looked pretty jagged, I tried to vector the hair. Not sure how this would turn out, but it's worth a shot. I also played with the bloodstains and also the text copy. I'm hoping for lots of comments.. Please comment before you leave. Thanks!

in addition, i would like to ask, is that paint or blood on the wall? it's a samurai anime / manga so im assuming that it's blood. however it looks alot like a poorly done paint job ( im sorry for sounding so rude ). i suggest improving it ( if it is really supposed to be paint then im so sorry for making wrong assumptions ). well but i really think that the font should be changed, the colour at least as it is blending in too much with the paint / blood & the wall. finally, um did you explain why your sig is "gabriel" instead of "titania"? perhaps that is also a reason. i hope this helps =)

sidenote: doesnt he have an "x" scar on his face ( unless im mistaking him for another guy )


Hey, no, you didn't sound rude.. My definition of "rude" is pretty much different from what you described. To think about it, yeah, your comments was quite an eye opener on my job trying to put some blood on the wall.

Oh yeah, the sig could probably be another reason. Now that I've seen other walls, especially those made exclusively for AP, the sigs usually include the usernames. At least I'm less of a AP newbie now than before.. Thanks!

(To answer your sidenote: This was Kenshin moments before he got the first half of his 'X' scar..

i believe he did, thought i saw it mentioned in one of the 2 links i posted a few posts up.


It is a real technique derived from the shinsengumi fighting style. Gatotsu however, isn't a real technique.. After all, stabbing techniques are usually not utilised fully in combat..

Is he not in the anime any more after Shishio? That's bad, really bad! Then the whos who are watching the anime only can think that he is dead then! That's not good!


That is why I prefer the manga version of the story!

Anyways, I may not agree 100% with his Aku Soku Zan principle, but he's a cool character.. And apart from Kenshin, he's one of the more cool-headed characters in the manga that doesn't behave recklessly.."

Basically, the anime differs from the manga after the Kyoto arc(the fight with Shishio). The manga has a Revenge arc, which details the past of Kenshin, and why he becomes the way he is in the manga.. This isn't covered in the anime, which brings in the topic of the OVA. The first 4 OVAs esplore Kenshin's past, and the final 2 OVAs cover a little on the Revenge arc(to be precise, the 5th OVA)..

So there you have a little bit of info on RK.. hope it's enough to distinguish between the anime, manga, and OVA.. Well, like I suggested earlier.. buy the manga!"

"Hey Xyrick.. Good to see ya here.. Anyway, just to note on your comments..
I really have no idea about the hair, because at it's actual size, it's not jagged. It's probably photobucket's fault by resizing the image to a smaller size. (The large size probably is what causes the download for you to be slow.. So yeah, to inform you, I'm working on a 1024x768 resolution.. heheh..)

Erm, Kenshin's eyes isn't red even if he is in his Hitokiri state.. As far as I remember about him, his eyes are light blue when he is the Rurouni, and yellow when he is in his Hitokiri state.. Maybe I'm a little colour blind or something, but I see that I coloured his eyes yellow and not light green.. I'm getting a little confused now.. o.O

Okay... Here's my fourth attempt anyways. Not much change to the overall mood, but I cleaned Kenshin up a little bit more by removing the cheesy effects. I found it to be better this way, keeping the character as clean as possible.

Also, I applied more dull to Kenshin's shirt, according to zazou8888, to suit the evening/night theme.

Here goes for my third attempt. ...clicky...

* I applied some filters on the background to give it a more artsy look compared to the photo look. It's not easy, but it was a worthwile experience and an ok effort in my opinion..
* I'm a bit more.. um.. generous.. with the blood splatter this time. Thanks for giving me an idea on blood splatter.. Should have been labeled as "blood splash" IMO =P
* And I dulled the blue on the shirt using the sponge tool..
* I don't know about you guys, but the text... I don't have any comments on how I did it.. I'm out of ideas for the text. Just a simple outer glow effect.

I'm quite blown away by the big change in my wall.. It really makes my first attempt look like some child's play. ^^

Again, still open for constructive criticism! Please!"

1) The background is really too real looking. It's probably a stock photo and it shows... So try out to use the intelligent blur tool to get it more mangaish look or found a manga background.
2) Kenshin : he's pretty nice but you have a lot of jaggy lines all around the character... I don't really know how to correct that now... But it's pretty obvious on the hair...
3) The blood is really not looking like some splatter of blood. I just finished a wall with a lot of blood and I know it's really hard to get nice brushes and use them well but if you use photoshop you'll find a lot of blood brushes on Deviantart.com...
4) The coloring of kenshin : it's a very nice work... I can't color so I like what you did but I think the colors are not dark enough for a night wall... Think that the only light you have is coming from the moon... So you need to have really darker colors.
5) I don't know a lot about the kenshin manga but I'll say the eyes look strange in bright yellow... But it's up to you... I would putt a darker yellow... To go again with the night colors but let's first way for the next version! It's a detail you can work later!
6) The font looks nice but I would change the color... It's way too obvious like that...

2. The hair has been bugging me a lot too.. I'm not too sure how to continue with it myself but to redraw it with the pen tool.. I think it's only going to work just a little bit..

4. Instead of recolouring him, I cheated it a little and changed the whole feel of the bg to become a more late evening theme than a night theme..
5. The eyes was my mistake.. it was a layer which I accidentally copied and overlooked.. ><
6. I'll change the font colour when I'm ready to submit.. I'm at a loss of what colour to choose for now..

Again, thanks.. I don't take your comments as being harsh.. Being an art student, constructive criticism is pretty much part of my life.. I've gotten used to constructive crits and I welcome it..

I'm pretty much satisfied with my work now, but I'm not sure about the rest of ya.. I would appreciate constructive criticism so that I can improve this wall.
